Missing page language isn’t just a tag issue it breaks accessibility. A correct lang attribute ensures screen readers speak clearly and your content works for everyone. Accessibility starts with language. Read Todd Libby’s insights.

The disability myth
Saying “No-one using our service has accessibility needs” is a bit like saying “We don’t need a ramp, no-one in a wheelchair has ever come up the stairs”. An accessible ramp at Glasgow Queen Street train station. The long, low rake helps wheelchair users but also people pushing prams, or a bike, or – as in this case – a heavy suitcase. Basically, it makes life easier for everyone. I remember once, a long time ago, a colleague asked me to publish some content on our website. It was marketing material, for a conference. PDF, of course. And very inaccessible. I declined, and we had a meeting. I explained why I couldn’t publish the material in its current state and they said “But there won’t be any blind people at this conference!” To which I replied, “No, there won’t, because your marketing means they can’t possibly even know it is on.” To be fair to my colleague, when I explained it to them, they got it. It literally hadn’t occurred to them. Why would it? Their job was to sell out a conference on renewable energy, or whatever it was. But in my experience, almost everyone gets it once you give them context. Almost everyone knows someone with accessibility needs, even if they currently have none themselves. Ableism is a silent assassin in our culture. It pervades our discourse. We must hear the voices of disabled people. Among whom I now count myself. But most people are decent, and kind. And want to do the right thing. Don’t scold them. Help them understand, and find a solution. On this occasion, I published the content as html with a friendly URL, and the PDF as an optional download. Win/win. No idea how many visually impaired people showed up at the conference, but that is emphatically not the point. This post is based on a series of posts on Mastodon in March 2025. Last night we announced the top three scorers of the 2025 Accessibility Internet Rally (AIR) competition. They were: First place: Code Your Dreams by A11y Cats Second place: Esther's Walking Journey by Usabellas Third Place: Westside Queer Resource Center by The Accessibeasts Spirits were high as we convened over 100 local and virtual participants. Old timers and newbies shared stories of learning digital accessibility or honing their existing skills. We looked back at Knowbility's history with the two co-founders Steve Guengerich and Sharron Rush on site and looked forward to an exciting future as Jillian Fortin Burtnett prepares to take on the role of Knowbility Executive Director in May. A tribute to the late David Dauber, friend to all, tireless disability advocate, and program Chair in 2025, touched us all. We were all winners last night - NPOs had shiny new accessible websites, web pros had learned new skills, and the joyful community of advocates for digital equity grew stronger. Visit the AIR pages of Knowbility's website to learn more and sign up to stay in the Know for AIR 2026 and Knowbility's other award-winning community programs. https://lnkd.in/er64DhAu Thanks to staff, volunteers, and all who make AIR the unforgettable experience it has been since 1998!

I can officially say I've withdrawn from my first application over an AI interview. UX and accessibility are human centered disciplines. If a company doesn't even value and center humans in hiring, it's unlikely to do so for UX or a11y. Those companies don't deserve my time or effort.

Does pagination need to load new pages or can thoughtful focus management make it feel seamless? Martin Underhill’s take will challenge how you think about this classic UI pattern.

Should pagination take you to a new page?
‘Pagination’ has comes from the word ‘page’, so yes, pagination should consist of pages. But the question is totally valid; worth digging into!
