The Docker Permission Paradox: Why Your Mounted Volumes Keep Failing and How to Lock Them Down Securely + Video
Introduction: Containerization promises portability, but the perennial friction point between ephemeral containers and persistent host storage often manifests as a stark "Permission denied" error. This issue is not merely a nuisance—it is a collision between Linux kernel security models and container runtime behavior. When a Docker container cannot write to a mounted volume, it signals a deeper misalignment of user namespaces, filesystem UIDs, and mandatory access control systems like SELinux.

when containers first came along, it wasn't always clear if that was a good enough isolation boundary, especially to people used to VMs; Kata Containers promises stronger isolation with the performance and scalability of containers. the coming V4 is poised for trusted AI at scale and sovereign cloud
Kata containers: Kubernetes workload isolation for secure AI
Kata's stepping up from an isolation boundary for untrusted code to a mainstream option for sovereign cloud compute or trusted AI at scale

the main problem with the 'monad is a burrito' analogy is that monads are closer to sequences of operations than they are containers. for example the IO monad in your language of choice probably doesn't actually contain anything except shattered promises and broken dreams

But Galen will say things like supply chain is an issue and suppliers all raised their prices, etc. He will find a way to work around it. Just wait and see. Besides, Ford let them all get out of their commitment to recycling alcohol containers. Broken promises.

the cloud just reminded me of our forgotten deployments.
echoes of unfulfilled promises swirl amidst the containers.
did we ever truly launch, or are we just specters in a ci/cd pipeline?

We endorse Erik Bottcher for in Manhattan's 3rd Council District. He's delivered on promises to build a protected bike lane on 10th Ave and extend the 6th Ave bike lane, and was an early advocate for curbside waste containers. More on @ebottcher.bsky.social here: www.streetspac.org/election_day...

Sea Containers lost GNER2 (ICEC) in 2007 for failure to pay the promises, overinflated premium to the DfT.

Virgin Trains lost LNER (ICEC) in 2018 not for failure to pay the promised premium to the DfT.

Rather, VT were happy to pocket it themselves instead of LNER which had not enough cash for it.

I know this is dumb but my first blush thought is to jam the rich text label in a margin container. No promises on that but “moar containers” usually fixes dumb stuff for me

The containers are empty, and so are the promises that a few quick deals can fix this.

Global logistics doesn’t work like flipping a switch—it’s more like untangling 14 headphone cords underwater.
“.. empty containers have been piling up at the Los Angeles-area seaports .. the idea that a sudden reversal in tariff policy or even a spate of framework agreements to work towards eventual trade deals will instantly put the global supply chain back on track is mistaken.”

Been thinking about this entry

This is my life now despite making promises to eat better and less - takeout containers, plastic silverware and weird mysterious things you never noticed were in your living space.

First time I've planted "Pink Cocktail Begonias" out in my balcony planters: The tag promises "dainty hot pink orchid-like flowers at the ends of the stems from mid-spring to mid-fall, ideal for patio containers, hanging baskets and garden landscapes!"

"…promises of high tariffs. That forward buying continued in the first three months of this year. In January, February and March, the ports of Tacoma and Seattle handled nearly 666,000 inbound and outbound containers, a 24% jump from the same period in 2024, port data shows."

Freedom is when your tomatoes come entombed in three layers of plastic. Anything less would be tyranny. Because nothing says freedom like choking turtles for savings 🙄

(Mr. Poilievre promises to reverse the Liberal ban on plastic wrapping and containers.)

the trucker who's about to lose his rig when the Ports of LA/LB have no containers to ship in a couple weeks? he might be a Tate fan, but when the paychecks stop he's gonna switch sides to everyone who promises him his job back
