Just finished Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South in audio form from CraftLit and while Victorian romances are not my normal thing, I enjoyed it! But holy god the English hate the Irish so much it’s mind bending.

True! As for the dyslexia, may I recommend the CraftLit podcast? It’s by an actress turned HS English teacher who does what she calls “annotated audiobooks,” where she gives the sort of intro and follow-up to each chapter that a really good English teacher would. She’s a great reader, too.

Did you know you can watch me on TWO separate YouTube channels pontificating about Jane? It's true! Over at CraftLit I talk about Emma with Heather and Becca. Over at my YouTube channel, I present on Jane Austen merch. Enjoy! 👉🏻 excessivelydiverting.substack.com/p/jane-auste...

We did that book on CraftLit podcast a decade ago. I’d forgotten that. Need to resurrect that recording!

—it’s how people found shows in olden times. I’m renewing that offer to indie podcasters: Here’s my 30 sec promo for the last book we did on CraftLit, J.Austen’s “Emma” (bit.ly/Emma-teaser). If you have a 30 second (family-friendly) promo for your indie podcast, please share it in this thread. 2 /3

Today I started listening to Emma (Jane Austen) as an audiobook, through the CraftLit podcast. I first read this for A-Level English Literature (many years ago), and spent a wonderful term discussing and analysing it. I’m looking forward to doing similar now #KnowingNovember #Day23

Today (or maybe started yesterday, I can’t remember) I got back into the CraftLit podcast, which I haven’t listened to for a few years - week by week chapters and discussion of a classic book, and added conversation. Have listened to loads #KnowingNovember #Day17

Really recommend the CraftLit podcast. Heather Ordover was an actress and then a high school English teacher. Started a podcast in 2006 reading public domain classics and providing the commentary that a great teacher does.

She has a great voice and has fellow actors reading when she doesn’t.
I had a beast of an English teacher who had us read, aloud, No Exit by Sartre so we could understand existentialism.

The classics, like a lot of art, are better enjoyed with the assist from a compelling tour guide. They have their place. I just can't see them being the only thing on the menu.

I’m not really an audiobook gal, but the SheDunnit podcast is excellent and will find you all sorts of new overlooked golden age women mystery writers to read. Also, short - 25 mins.

If you are nostalgic for a great HS English teacher, recommend the CraftLit podcast of “annotated audiobooks.”

If you want audiobooks with commentary, a favorite of many years is CraftLit: a former English teacher plays chapters of public domain books and bookends them with book talk and crafty chat. She's been doing it more than 15 years now, so there are a lot of books to enjoy, & she's a smart, fun lady.
