When I was in high school I did a constitutional debate program and witnessed this exchange:

JUDGE: what’s your favorite amendment?

KID: the third

JUDGE: why the third?

KID: because if there’s soldiers in your house, the other ones really don’t matter

Orin is probably the preeminent fourth amendment scholar in the United States. He is also extremely professional. This is the way he says "I wish a bitch would try"
This DHS memorandum says that the DHS General Counsel's office has adopted a new position that the Fourth Amendment allows entry into the home to make an arrest just based on an administrative warrant.

I would like to see that argument.

you send an army to occupy what you tell them is enemy territory, they're going to treat everyone who lives there as the enemy
Scenes from occupied Minneapolis: "3 SUVs ICE officers driving down 21st to 42nd street. The ice officer rolled down his window and took a photo of me and said 'I got you motherfucker'. I am just a home owner going outside to see what was going on."

Calculation for massive protests is different in parliamentary systems, where a no-confidence vote will bring down the government and trigger new elections.

In the US, protests may sway votes on particular bills, but the same people will remain in power. Governments have learned not to care.

one of the most hilarious* things about america and its preoccupation of being The Most Freedom Country is that it has an unprecedented surveillance network that is trivially available to government that government didn't even have to pay for, it tricked its citizens/residents into buying it
“Safety experts and tech critics have long condemned the Ring devices for security risks and privacy violations, not to mention their role in building the largest civilian surveillance network in US history.”
Fury as Amazon Ring Cameras Are Hooked Up to ICE System
Online activists are telling owners of Ring Doorbell cameras that it's time to get rid of their devices, which can be used by ICE.

“Democrats obscured Biden’s cognitive decline” is really being blown out of the water by “Republicans are embracing and profiting from Trump’s cognitive decline.”

I must imagine they've called everyone and said "look, he's dying, just hold on" because lacking that (and even WITH that), the response of other nations' governments to this moment indicates the full and earned death of the Western Liberal Order.

The double cognitive load of a) the President is deranged, and nobody in power acting he's deranged is stressful, and b) there are millions of Americans who get their news from media sanewashing the President, so they don't *know* he's deranged, so they think *we're* deranged, is ... fun.

No one is fucking protecting police legitimacy. What they are saying is that the police are horrible and ICE is something infinitely worse.

The most dangerous thought anyone ever had is things can’t get any worse.
i don't understand why so many people are so adamant that what ICE is doing is not the same as law enforcement. i disagree and i think a lot of the arguments ring very hollow, but more to the point: what's behind the desperate need to protect police legitimacy right now?

If another country's leader put our military on high alert I would not want to hear from the people proclaiming that they didn't vote for the guy. We need to eat this one until we fix it

These fucking assholes drove by an elementary school during the short window of morning drop off. They want to intimidate us but all they’re doing is pulling every single parent off the sidelines.
How do you think you’ll feel when the paramilitary drives by your kid’s elementary school in a show of force? I hope you never have to find out.

Pretty much all of Triangle Bluesky now relies on this lil guy for our weather reports. I'm glad we have him but also it's ridiculous how much worse our access to weather info has gotten.
You basically have to wait for an algorithm to show you a local weather influencer because the media ecosystem and global apps are that degraded

Lot of truth to this.
Really wish the asshole Europeans would understand that this isn’t the U.S. starting an imperial expansion.

This is an eviscerated shell of a U.S. government being used as a weapon by *international* tech oligarchs to end traditional, democratic nations and replace them with a tech-run dystopia.

My extreme cold tip for southerners. Find out now how to drain the pipes in your house. If you lose heat and decide to leave, drain pipes and shut water off before you go, so you don’t come home to a flooded disaster.

Ok but like isn't this the second or third time Air Force One had to turn back during an Atlantic crossing. I know we all want it to be about Trump, but what if they forgot to pack Stephen Miller in the earth of his homeland, and had to turn back before crossing the water?

Had a screenwriting teacher around this time tell us that you could use allusions that not everyone would understand. However, the bit had to “sound” funny, so the audience would chuckle when the actor delivered the line, even if they didn’t fully get the joke. The below qualifies.
Fred Sanford spreading his handkerchief on the tailgate of the truck for Donna to sit on while archly remarking "Sir Walter Raleigh"
"If you watch an episode of Cheers, you might hear references to foreign filmmakers, to classical musicians, to Russian novelists. The level of assumed knowledge back then was far greater; now, TV is rarely adventurous in its allusions."

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

New— An American citizen boarding flight from Boston to Lisbon just now told me after showing boarding pass, every passenger stopped on jetway by two ICE agents demanding to take their photo. When passenger asked why, ICE threatened to detain them. If they said no photo, couldn't board/TBD detained.

we're getting all the downsides of cyberpunk (social alienation, ruthless hyper capitalism, digital mass surveillance state) but none of the promised upsides (cheap street food, cool jackets, super drugs that make you really fast and strong before they kill you)
