I recall them. There's no regulatory reason I'm aware off, but by separating them, the slot between creates more of a downwash effect

In Aviation, altitude and airspeed are both estimated via pressure-difference.
Which is fine, where a 'baseline' pressure changes very little
- and that's a 'standard' assumption in the Aerodynamics of Flight.
But it simply isn't true. And in situations with little 'room for error', it's lethal.

The only other possible justification for that shape on the upper sidepods is to generate downwash and direct it outboard to assist outwash. But definitely seems more likely it's a channel for cooling louvres

Wouldn't the downwash also negate the lower pressure behind the tyre, equalising it more to the pressure generated in front, thus reducing lift from that?

That's what I was wondering. I ate there many years ago and I remember a big jet landed and a minute later it's downwash settled over us at in and out. Gusty for a few seconds!

The solution is the Vuichard Maneuver that allows the helicopter to 'sidestep' its downwash and shift its rotor into undisturbed air.
