I was in Florida and saw the explosion, the trail was so long and lasted what felt like forever. It was heartbreaking and gut wrenching to know that these amazing lives were lost. Rest In Power Challenger Crew.💔
Forty years ago, today, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in mid air after being launched, killing all 7 crew members; one was a school teacher. It was a sad day for space travel & history.

My most compelling memory of the Challenger explosion came a few years after the fact when one of my college friends, whose dad was an aerospace engineer, told me as they were watching the news that night, his dad turned to him and said, "o-rings."

Fireworks were different. You lit a fuse. Had no clue when it would shoot off. If it went off at all. Had no clue the size of the explosion. No clue how loud it would be. To him it felt like walking through a minefield blind. Never knowing what step would trigger an explosion.

I can't believe it's been 40 years already; it's so clear in my mind. The office where I was working had a TV in the lobby, and it was packed with people watching. After the explosion, we were just silent, in shock.
