People often mistake familiarity with good. Especially when it comes to sports.

I’m not disagreeing, I think that the reason there is because large companies have far more control about what does or doesn’t succeed and therefore familiarity is the default compared to independent works.

You feel like you’re drowning

You don’t want to get out of bed

You crave grounding & familiarity

"Mind you, it's not much to look at..." Familiarity breeds contempt/apathy? 😂

I'm not talking about that though
I'm talking about how suffocating anime conventions feel because there are a lot of talented animators and artists making original stuff but what sells is familiarity and comfort of what people already like

Black-and-white photographs evoke longing and safety by finding meaning and beauty in ordinary, mundane moments, presenting nostalgia as dream-like familiarity.

You’d think Beck has some familiarity with Salt Lake City.
I love that Bad Bunny kicked off his North American tour in Salt Lake and it was the Delta Center’s highest grossing single-day concert.

Just as “familiarity breeds contempt”, the same is true for superiority.
It’s like hating Michael Jordan only because he can STILL beat you in a game of one on one, rather than feel honored by the experience.

I see this every time classic releases the next expansion. People I know who hated on it, are suddenly hit with nostalgia and say it’s always been good. And there’s nothing wrong with that, but it would be nice if they acknowledged they simply don’t like change and crave familiarity.

Fortunately my state has made that almost impossible. I need to go out of state to gun shows apparently. I own two 22s and a semiauto shotgun, none of which I feel comfortable with. I need an M16 and an M1911. Or an AK47. They're the only weapons I have enough familiarity with to want(OK- AR15)

Nioh 3's success is diminished by Team Ninja's rapid output of similar games, resulting in familiarity over innovation.

I proposed a similar scale where 10 is a single digit number of players and each point down is a factor of ten increase, which puts 1 in the billions. Recall Nile's initial prompt said no TCG familiarity at all was 1, which encompasses most of the world. Fresh player w/ tcg experience would be 2 IMO

Traveling with your pet is all about shared experiences. AVMA President Dr. Michael Bailey says the golden rule is familiarity: "If you’re going to an activity which your pet has not been used to doing, you probably don’t want to do it." Here’s what he shared with The NY Times https://bit.ly/4qkQbfd

Taking along a companion animal sounds like a great idea, but making it work can be tough. We’ve got tips to make sure it’s a vacation for both of you.

Haven’t been terribly active, most of my drawing has been boxes and such, but I did jump in to illustrator and do some work with the pen tool and shapes for my sister, also pictured 2 early concepts, which I suppose also is some drawing.

@pymundgenealogy.bsky.social, I expect you've got at least some familiarity with relatively esoteric Jewish names. Do you know if anybody in modern-ish Jewish history has named a child either בג בג or הא הא?

When bad is forced into our lives and we don't have direct control over it, the best we can do is cling to familiarity and escapism. If you can still play a game, then not all hope is lost, right?

That way, when there is the power to enforce it, it will have some familiarity and legitimacy to a lot of folks. A Dem admin could even feign reluctance, “Wow geez we looked into this and turns out it was all illegitimate!”

The absolute truth spoken here. The Anglo American empire always do this: abuse/subjugate/humiliate people in the nations they “colonise” (ie rob), then once those people fight & liberate themselves, expect them to accept an offer of reconciliation on the basis of …what? Abuse familiarity? Inhuman.

That’s exactly right - deep familiarity with what you’re speaking about and knowledge of the specific talk you’re giving makes improv in the moment like that much, much easier.
