we all got cowed into avoiding "virtue signaling" as if the public affirmation of socially agreed upon ethical principles was somehow cringey instead of a significant part of what a "society" even is. now all there's left is vice signaling, and it's reshaping society.

my great-grandparents arrived in the UK in the 1890s with nothing.
they sold pickles from the front room window, took in laundry, worked as tailors.
their children were nurses, teachers, salesmen.
their grandchildren were professors, designers, opticians, doctors, magistrates, entrepreneurs.
This is so disgusting.

During today's oral argument, the Trump admin and the Court’s conservatives treated agencies as some kind of headless, out-of-control fourth branch of government, accountable to no one

But the real problem isn't about a lack of reins

It's about who holds them

The Supreme Court Wants You to Believe Congress Does Not Exist
The conservative justices aren’t concerned about unaccountable federal agency heads. They are concerned about federal agency heads who aren’t accountable to their favorite president.

I think “the president’s allies are promising to destroy media institutions the president doesn’t like to curry favor with him” is very bad, actually
New WSJ reporting: "During a December visit to Washington, David Ellison offered assurances to Trump administration officials that if he bought Warner, he'd make sweeping changes to CNN, a common target of President Trump's ire, people familiar with the matter said..."
Behind Paramount’s Relentless Campaign to Woo Warner Discovery and President Trump
David Ellison has launched a hostile takeover bid for Warner Discovery, taking his case directly to shareholders after Netflix clinched a deal.

What disease is this that thinks the only reason to do something is the hope of having an impact?

I didn't leave Twitter because I thought leaving would hurt Twitter or change what it had become. I left because what it had become was nauseating and unpleasant

Seeing a leader of the United States adopt this line is revolting. While the US remains imperfect, it is also the global leader in FDI as well as the world’s leading destination for inbound investment. China would love to have an economy like America’s.

I say AFAICT because even I can tell gender is complicated and I'm deeply uncomfortable with my flesh and bone, but very comfortable with maleness/masculinity despite curiosity about what alternatives would be like from an experiential perspective.
I think this *might* be an area where it's less gender dysphoria in particular and more dysphoria in general - because I think dealing with severe depression and the existence of psychosis in my family had a similar effect for me, and as far as I can tell I'm a cis man.

yeah i think ultimately the rationalists were right to be afraid of reason, because they swam optimistically into the dark and promptly got devoured by an eldritch horror called scientific racism

I am ethically but not morally opposed to the less moderate option on this. They should not be subject to inhumane treatment or forced labor, but we should acknowledge that they have dehumanized *themselves* through their actions. They are, from a moral perspective, hostis humani generis.

For fucks sake people buy some media literacy. This isn't acknowledging the Holocaust it's claiming the numbers are made up:

What’s the number, 7, 6 million? Something like that. … It could maybe even be more ... It could even be higher. It’s at least six million. IT COULD BE 100 TIMES THAT."

A reminder that she was fired not for fucking RFK Jr, but for not informing her editors or audience, and given her history at this point, it's incredibly safe to say it's her basic MO. That's not personal ethics, that's professional ethics.
Possibly the only thing more freakish than Nuzzi's prose is the contortions her defenders twist themselves into. "She's not just hot, but she definitely is hot, while also being a vulnerable smol child. Also, criticizing her is sexist."

In this context, the decision by too many mainline Jewish orgs to almost exclusively focus on policing progressive critics of Israel to prop up Israel’s far-right government, while politely ignoring burgeoning antisemitism on the mainstream right, is a mistake we may *not* live to regret.
