your foodshelf probably doesnt have the space to store that much more food than they currently have, especially perishables. freezer/fridge space is premium real estate for them. this goes back to the money thing; if you send them money, they can buy what they have space for and wait until it's used

So I’m always going to suggest looking hyper local (eg your community foodshelf) but Feeding America is the giant parent nonprofit of most food banks. I love the work of Civil Eats too.

Also one last bit. Donating to your local foodshelf over the regional food bank will funnel your donations quicker and provide a more street-level use. Do what you feel is best, though.
