#isiXhosa
Sometimes I make mixtape-style playlists to amuse myself, and here's one I put together to capture the mood of stoic optimism I'm bringing into 2026. I'm calling it "masiqhubeke," which means "let's keep going" in isiZulu and isiXhosa.

We study subword learning for 3 morphologically diverse languages: isiXhosa is agglutinative, Setswana is disjunctive (morphemes space-separated), and English as a typological middle ground. Learning dynamics vary across languages, with agglutinative isiXhosa being most unstable.

Grad an meinen Freund Axolile gedacht und wie er sich Weißen gegenüber immer ohne Klicklaut im Name vorgestellt hat (das x wäre einer, ist isiXhosa) und auch wäre so ein Fall von internalisiertem Rassismus..

Great song. I couldn't sort this out, but was curious about the language being sung.
"Michael Stipe's collaboration with the South African singer Aluta on the track 'With Apologies' features lyrics sung in both English and isiXhosa."

Day 11
Moonchild Sanelly, “Yebo Teacher” (2021)

The one that made me a fan. A song about “putting the work in, not just in school but in life”. Sung in a mixture of isiXhosa and English.

Mthuthuzeli November’s ‘Pinch Me’ Moment at the Paris Opera Ballet
“Ya-pa-pa, ta-ta-ta, um da da deeeee da da dum,” the choreographer Mthuthuzeli November sang to the tune of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” using the clicking sounds of his native isiXhosa language from southern Africa. The melody unspooled in a huge airy studio at the top of the Opera Bastille in Paris. “Let’s have those legs higher,” he called out to a group of Paris Opera Ballet dancers.

[READ] Hard work pays off, and for Sanelisiwe Qayi, her recent award as the top student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities was a recognition of that work ethic, passion for justice and her love for her mother tongue, IsiXhosa. #IAmUWC bit.ly/47AExph

Davide Belle's album, 'Raspberry Flow', is a travelogue of love, longing, and the restless human spirit.

Hear English, French, Spanish, Creole, and even isiXhosa swirl together. Featuring vocalist Thando Skwatsha, it's an expansive, unforgettable listen

… as well as learning Gujurati from neighbours in Kenya. Here in South Africa most white people only speak two languages but the majority of people speak three to six. My black colleagues didn’t only speak close languages to isiXhosa like isiZulu but also Setswana and tshePedi, English, Afrikaans.

Sing the World - 30 years of Canticum. The traditional isiXhosa song "Indodana", arranged by South African composers Michael Barrett & Ralf Schmitt, mourns the crucifixion of Christ with haunting harmonies & spiritual depth making it one of the most emotionally resonant pieces in choral repertoire.

Nice, thanks! The [ɕʌ], from /sjʌ/ I'm assuming? reminds me of the /CwV/ -> [CjV] synchronically active in isiXhosa.

Do you think ICE would flip out if we did the YIBAMBE! chant from Avengers: Infinity War at a protest? ("Yibambe" is an isiXhosa word from South Africa meaning "Stand Strong"). Personally I think this would give them pause.
