For those who don't know me, I recently retired as a journalism professor at NYU. I kept the role of press critic who writes about the media and politics, and journalism's struggle for survival. I have a PhD in media studies, and 35 years experience in puzzling through problems in press behavor. 4/

“why don’t leftists trust all journalists equally?” I dunno. maybe journalism’s institutional bigotries directly contributing to our current situation? because journalism, like every industry, is captured by pedophillic fascist billionaires and tech dipshits? because your fav journalist posts bad?

Don’t miss this Masterclass by an expert on “the media and politics, and journalism's struggle for survival”. Thread
"When in doubt, draw a distinction."

Not sure where he got it, but in grad school one of my teachers taught me that.

This (long) thread is about the key distinctions I rely on as a critic. There's a Twitter version from 2021. This one builds on that one.

I will post them one at a time. Ready?

What makes a PhD geneticist walk away from the lab bench to become one of science journalism's top editors?

Tonight 6pm PST: I'm talking to @rosiemestel.bsky.social, executive editor at Knowable Magazine (@knowablemag.bsky.social ), about that exact journey.

fools. Journalism’s job is to clarify, not to sensationalize. By collapsing nuance into scandal, these so‑called analyses betrayed the public’s trust and undermined the very accountability they claim to serve.

Accountability demands precision. Anything less is malpractice.

In my generation and ones that followed, the Washington Post was a destination job. We were inspired by Woodward and Bernstein, brilliant and fearless reporting and great writing. But Bezos is burning it to ground. I grieve for journalism's decline and good friends who soon will be looking jobs.
News: The Washington Post is preparing to slash upwards of 300 staffers, incl sports, metro and foreign desks @nataliekorach.bsky.social reports.

“The newsroom is being punished for absolute incompetence from the owner and publisher,” one staffer told @status.news

In a message for the 60th World Day of Social Communications, Pope Leo XIV warned of AI’s impact on information ecosystems, and stressed journalism’s vital role in building public trust. A message that speaks directly to the mission of the Truth Tellers Summit.

Had the incredible opportunity yesterday to hear Nobel Laureate @mariaressa.bsky.social speak about journalism’s role in fighting fascism.

She talked about the work her company The Nerve does to map disinformation networks and show how they work to shift narratives.

This slide sums up that work.

I really hate how "unbiased" means you have to pretend to just snapped into being this morning and that this principle is journalism's North Star.

One more quote because this story is so good: "It is perverse to think about now, but what kept me going in Haiti, especially amid the horror of those first weeks, was the thought of joining the elect company of journalism’s greats."

Bari and Co really believe they are doing something Important and Transformative that will Enshrine Them In Journalism's History.

Rarely do we get to watch as someone's ambitions so far exceed their skill, intelligence, and charisma.

News flash to CNN: moms have had to monitor ICE because hacks like y'all haven't been doing your job holding police accountable. That's one of journalism's core tasks: monitoring and reporting on police forces and taking them to task when they kill people.

This is the polar opposite of journalism's mission and role. I'm not surprised she doesn't get it, because that's never been her job, but writing it out so explicitly that you don't know what journalism is about should be embarrassing.
