Somebody needs to invite me to a fancy party. Getting dressed up might temporarily bolster my will to live.
A lot of people have been freaks for a long time. Free-range organic freaks.
It's much easier to encounter Romance in the traditional way. Stumbling upon paperbacks at your grandma's house when you are 12.

Last August I stuck some vegetable starts in a hastily filled raised bed just to have something green instead of a bare patch of earth. Mostly things survived if kind of stunted, but take a look at this monstrosity:

Sometimes I get annoyed at Heated Rivalry takes that are ignorant of the art form, the universe of Romance.

But then I'm delighted seeing people's first experiences with Romance.

Intimacy! Vulnerability! Growth! Becoming the people you need to be to be happy and make each other happy! It's good!

I didn't realize I hadn't put the salt into the neti pot water until everything was very bad in my sinuses.

I wondered why my perioral dermatitis was flaring up. Then I remembered my estrogen has a manufacturer's shortage, so I'm day three HRT cold turkey.

i have been reading Tom Ricks’ “Fighting the Good War” which is a military analysis of the civil rights movement, and one thing that comes abundantly across is that movement leaders and ordinary people made it a practice to refuse to fall into despair and cynicism.

in any case, i have been a vocal critic of trump for a decade. i want nothing more than to see trumpism purged from this country. my view is that this will only be accomplished by a deep and nuanced understanding of where trump is strong and where he is weak.

Trump is not omnipotent. He exists within a web of institutions. His authority is not unlimited. It appears that way largely because his allies occupy key places — Congress — that could provide a meaningful check. Important to understand his actual reach and the limits of that reach. (14/14)

Put a little differently, the question isn't — when it comes to state conduct of elections, certification of state elections and the seating of lawmakers — "who will stop *him*" but rather "who will stop *them*." (13/?)

What we are seeing now, at home and abroad, is his attempt to inflict as much pain as possible in those areas where he has close to total freedom of action: immigration enforcement and foreign policy. But even there, there are limits — practical, operational and logistical constraints. (7/?)

Bouie keeps getting slammed for these sensible and sober minded Takes because there are people who've come to see anything short of maximal Doomerism as somehow complacency - you're saying I *shouldn't* feel maximally bad!??? Yet it is obvious on reflection that maximal doomerism breeds complacency.
There are places where Trump, as president, has broad freedom of action. And there are places where Trump, as president, has been able to act unilaterally because the main point of opposition, Congress (and SCOTUS), support his program. (1/?)

One of my seminary commencement speakers admonished us to be always on guard against "the arrogance of despair" - because to despair is to presume that you can know the outcome of any given situation, and that knowledge is beyond any of us.

We need to pick up this Overton Window and throw it as far as we can. Stop waiting for shit to “be popular” and start advocating for what is transparently right.

A very important thing for you to know about Icelandic is that the word "rassgat" (butthole) is used as an endearment about cute things. So if you say someone is "algjört rassgat" (a total butthole) it means they are VERY cute. If the cuteness is overwhelming we say "rúsínurassgat" (raisin asshole).
