RANDY CALIFORNIA (RIP) “Kapt. Kopter And The (Fabulous) Twirly Birds”.
His first solo album following the collapse of Spirit.
A somewhat curious album.
It began with California hooking up with friends he met at nightclub jam sessions. So, it's “loose”, but very good. Plus the “name” friends were given pseudonyms due to them being under contract elsewhere. Former Spirit bandmate Ed Cassidy was listed as 'Cass Strange'. Noel Redding and drummer Les Sampson (then in Noel's current band: Road), were credited as 'Clit McTorius' and 'Henry Manchovitz'. California had been heavily affected by the death of his friend (and former bandmate) Jimi Hendrix. A Hendrix influence is quite evident here. Four of the eight tracks were covers (James Brown, The Beatles, Paul Simon, ...). But as Spirit's “The Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus” had been somewhat of a “sleeper” album, California's name alone wasn't enough to draw attention. Randy and band (comprised of Ed Cassidy and bassist Larry Knight) briefly toured. But the album was criminally overlooked by most. Featured standouts” “Downer”, “I Don't Want Nobody”, “Mother And Child Reunion”, “Devil”, … The CD re-issue has three additional tracks from the sessions. RIP Randy California, Noel Redding, and Ed Cassidy. ~ HH

Dead & Gone was the track I’d heard a few times before and one of the best, plus the closer Kopter. I wanted them all like that really.

Loved Toy and they were ace live. For me they made about half of every album amazing and the rest fillers. Kopter remains to this day an absolute belter.

The first art I made in my manic high after finishing the game: a monochrome, heavily textured digital drawing of the King of Rot. Might I say, Your Majesty, you are looking absolutely rotten today! Just foul, disgusting, nasty <3 <3 Grumpy Kong holding an unconscious Void Kong in his lap in the Forbidden Layer. Void has three jagged claw marks across his face. A lineless digital painting of King K. Rool with his cape flowing out behind him. His eyes are closed, but his bloodshot one is ever so slightly open. His right hand is wearing a boxing glove, and he cradles his blunderbuss under that arm. His left hand is raised, and above him arch seven bananas, each successive one from left to right in an increased state of decay, until the final one above his hand is melting with rot. His kopter-pack pokes up from behid him as well. Vibrant brambles curl around him, with darker ones further in the background. A halo-like burst of light emanates from behind his head. Art I drew the night of the game's release. At the time, I said: "Donkey Kong smiling at Pauline, who is on his shoulder, smiling back at him. In the background is a glowing golden crockoid skeleton and a broken banandium gem. There is also a frame with a pattern reminiscent of the DK arcade girder motif seen throughout the game (it can also represent a specific pattern seen in a very specific place elsewhere, but who knows? I certainly don't know. I can only hope)."

I always had this headcanon that the Barrel Blast Kremlings (not Kritter, Klump and Kopter) were not associated to K. Rool, and they were on their own with their personal goals. But now, thinking of Kalypso in the terms of a fighting game, I'd make her part of the Krew, so I can make her a pirate

Redesigning Kopter

Promotional render for Kopter. This one too has something fun to look at; just a little guy that can fly through the air by just spinning around with propellors in hand. As with Bazuka, they are indestructible. Promotional image for Krook from DKC2. Why do I bring this up, you may ask? Well, remember how I'm going with the horror genre with these redesigns? Instead of holding onto the propellors, Kopter's lower arms *are* the propellors in this redesign. As with Kutlass and the redesign of Kobble, letting them make the first move is the best option. And that's still only on land when you can best them. They still do fly and are indestructible as such.
