I gave my fursona a go. This is my noctule, Remnant in anthro form! She is vampire bat and carribou inspired. Noctules are an open species by the_childofflames! Art is by me:)

I thought it was general knowledge that Greater Noctules did this? My uncle has witnessed it from a Mediterranean terrace bar! Ahead of his time maybe

I saw those there once. It's like some poured black cornflakes into the sky. The huge ones at the stables were probably noctules, seen plenty of pipistrelles around London too. Also muntjacs at the stables, obviously. The only otter I remember clearly was on Coll in the Inner Hebrides.

introduce yourself with 5 animals you've seen in the wild:

- a fox trotted round my telescope on Hampstead Heath.
- bats, (noctules) often seen at the stables
- slow worm, legless lizard on Clent Hills
- same hedgehog as @langsec.hacker.gf on Islay
- Do the sealions at Fisherman's Wharf, SF count?
introduce yourself with 5 animals you've seen in the wild:

- red fox
- wapiti (north american elk)
- sea lion
- musk ox
- european hedgehog
Introduce yourself with 5 animals you've seen in the wild:

- Grizzly, Kodiak
- Black bear
- Bald eagle
- Red tailed hawk
- Monarch butterfly (before they were endangered)

Introduce yourself with 5 animals you’ve seen in the wild:

California sea lion
European hedgehog
Pacific Gophersnake
Bald eagle
...And tons and tons and tons of bats but they were very fast and in the dark so I can't tell you specifically what kind they were, but likely common noctules a lot.
Introduce yourself with 5 animals you’ve seen in the wild:

Opossums
Racoons
Squirrels
Vultures
Foxes

I've seen a ton more but these are the West Philly usual suspects around here.
Introduce yourself with 5 animals you’ve seen in the wild:

-Tarantula
-Coyote
-Rattlesnake
-Very large crane fly by my apartment balcony
-Very large Dog riding a motorcycle, complete with helmet, holding onto its owner riding down a highway

I would like a chorus of noctules t-shirt, please...
🦇 A group of bats can be called a colony, a cauldron, or even a cloud. But with over 1,500 bat species worldwide (and 18 here in the UK!), we think it’s time to get a little more imaginative.

Surely our brilliant bats deserve names as unique as they are. Join our campaign and help us #NameThatBat .

We've put together shortlists of prospective names for 4 species UK bats. Today we're highlighting the noctule. They are large, loud and often the first bat you’ll see at dusk. But should they be called....?

A screech of noctules
A thunder of noctules
A chorus of noctules

What a surprising behavior !

Living on water, bats (pipistrelles) are often almost constant evening companions. One of our favourite stopping places is home-ground to noctules.

A second study across 12 reintroduction areas found that species like pipistrelles, Daubenton’s and noctules were 21–54% more active in beaver wetlands, while woodland specialists such as barbastelles showed a massive 313–393% increase.

After all, why should birds and other mammals have all the fun? Help us choose new collective nouns for 4 of our UK bat species! What should we call a group of common pipistrelles, noctules, Daubenton's bats or brown long-eared bats?

Regarder par sa fenêtre. Voir plein de chiro chasser au dessus du jardin. Courir chopper son Teensy. Courir dehors.
Écouter les pipistrelles communes et noctules communes depuis le jardin 🥰

Oh you need to connect with some UK bat nerds! I suggest @batconservation.bsky.social Bat Conservation Trust. They have loads of volunteers with bat detectors and good knowledge of local bat fauna. You have some fantastic ones. Noctules that eat birds! Long-eared Bats (spectacular) & Horseshoe bats!

A bit scarred robin-wise at the mo, after reading about how noctules catch them on migration at high altitude and bite their wings off before eating them on the way down.

Researchers fitted bats with tiny backpacks containing microphones & motion sensors. Results, in Science, reveal how noctules pursue their prey in steep, breakneck-speed dives towards the ground, much like fighter aircraft in dogfights
