Really pleased to be on board! Plenty of stories to dig into around apples, orcharding, and cider in Virginia.

Pioneers of Olive Town!

Third week of summer is starting and we're starting off with quite a lot of orcharding!
Let's hope we can unlock the jam maker soon, cause I want to see what it's about.
Let's also hope we can get some more orichalcum.

The Cherokee did a lot of work to adapt peaches to the southeast's weather. IIRC some of those cultivars were the parents of modern southeastern peaches, so they're still the foundation of orcharding in the Southeast.

Wouldn't be surprised if that were true for apples as well.

Diane Flynt is key not just to the renaissance in cider throughout the South, but also at the very heart of orcharding for apples, specifically cider apples.

It is always a joy to speak with her about not just cider apples, but growing apples for cider - an important distinction.

I don't know much about fruit, but did thoroughly enjoy reading about orcharding in the Ecological Farm by Helen Atthowe and liked the crossover into my veggie life.

You should

It’s the best collection of apples varieties we have.

You should also visit the Home Orchard Education Center at Clackamas Community College , I’ve taken orcharding classes there and volunteered there, also excellent resource if you’re interested in apples

Pretty impressive. The fire break around the perimeter possibly the most useful lesson. Having no plants under the trees is not so desirable in other respects.

How an orchard in Turkey survived a wildfire
Recent wildfires scorched vast areas across Turkey, but one orchard in the north-western province of Bursa stood untouched.

Different crops are already starting to be grown in different in different areas. #Northland is becoming more suitable for subtropical fruits, and #Canterbury is warming up for solid maize production (although mostly for animal feed) and more orcharding. Extreme events will be the issue. #agsky

To be fair, she looks to be sensibly turned out for a hard day's orcharding. The boots will enable her to prune much higher branches & the hem of her ganzy up out of harm's way to avoid getting dragged into dangerous machinery. That's what you'd want in a woman. Practicality and common sense, right?

Did some minor googling on orcharding, occupational tattoos, and space elevators.

Learned a little about mulching and irrigation systems, how a sailor earns a compass tat, and that you'd ride in a "crawler" on a space elevator.
What sort of niche research have you had to do for your latest book/WIP? What did you learn? #WritingPrompt

Over 20 speakers and panelists will be presenting on a range of topics covering the conference’s four core strands of orcharding, making, culture and business.

This year’s event was a sell out, so get the dates in your diary and your tickets booked if you don’t want to miss out next year.

Hawthorn proved to be a host for the fireblight bacteria and it swept across the country Ripping up hawthorn in orcharding areas proved ineffective The epidemic has now settled to endemic level It cannot be eradicated but managed by early excision of infected branches before the tree is killed

It sounds like M bovis was crushing for this dairying couple
Glad there are positives for them and their family, & the land use change to orcharding will help bring much needed #biodiversity to the plains.

Made the mistake of spending time in Solarpunk/Agroforestry reddit. So much of it is people who know NOTHING about plants, orcharding, food production/storage/distribution. Ppl genuinely believe plant three trees, get food year round

Turns out they get pissed when you add nuance to the conversation
