💦Fungi on 🐿️💩 (cf squirrel)

I believe the #fungi is something in the Mucorales, like Phycomyces. Regardless of species I love it. #fungifriends

#MicrobiologyMonday: How do fungi see the world?🍄👁️They can detect colors using photoreceptors, with blue light serving as a key signal to guide fungal growth. In #MMBRJournal, researchers explore the role of photoreceptors in fungal biology: asm.social/2yD

From the substrate I think it is Phycomyces blakesleyanus but I am not knowledgeable about lookalikes and I am more of a slime guy than a fungi

A side note, working on Phycomyces was the next project of Max Delbrück, who won a Nobel prize for determine the nature of mutation. These amazing videos came from him originally -- What Wikipedia describes as "some unfruitful effort on mold behavior in the 1960s" www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHoV... 6/8

You might wonder, why does a fungus need to sense gravity. Phycomyces grows on dung, near the ground. To get above leaves/debris, it needs to know which way is up, to get its spores airborne. They found that a protein complex, OCTIN, forms large cytoplasmic balls, which sink in the cell 2/8

Weird patch of fungus. Looks like some form of zombie grass. Possibly Phycomyces?

I'd guess it's something in Phycomyces which does like to grow on feces and other rotting things - interesting find!

I really enjoy shooting macro in Winter. Even though there is less activity over all, I can shift my focus towards #moss, #fungi, and #lichens, which can form very science-fictiony micro-landscapes. It's very relaxing.

Here are some things I saw on my walk yesterday:

some kind of phycomyces, i think, for any curious mycologists
going nuclear on cleaning this bird feeder (sanitize mode on the dishwasher, it has some kind of persistent mold that regrows in the seed all the damn time but i guess that's what i get for exposing grain to pnw weather)

Das dürfte Phycomyces blakesleeanus sein. Ein ganz netter Vertreter der Aspergillen.

Lots feels heavy these days, so dropping some hairy poop mold (Phycomyces blakesleyanus) into the [mycorrhizal] net, a saprophyte who literally specializes in transforming bad shit. Always be expanding one’s hero archetypes, right? #fungifriends

Could this be Phycomyces blakesleeanus Pin Mould on a dog turd outside our back gate (yuk!)?

Also Brown Puffball (Bovista nigrescens)?

But this little brown job with decurrent gills on our lawn has foxed me. Any suggestions?
