Long hairlike stalks with yellow and black spheres on the ends Purple fuzz crust fungus. Just like it sounds. Fuzzy & purple.

Examples of the responses to light of fungi. (A) Light induces the biosynthesis of the orange carotenoid pigment neurosporaxanthin in the vegetative mycelia of N. crassa, but this pigment is synthesized in large quantities in vegetative spores (conidia). When N. crassa grows in tubes with slanted media, orange conidia accumulate at the top of the tube, allowing the visualization of the difference between the orange mycelia of the wild-type and the white mycelia of the blind mutant white collar-1 (wc-1). (B) Blue light guides the growth, phototropism, of fruiting bodies, sporangiophores, of Phycomyces blakesleeanus. Light applied from one side of the sporangiophore during 5 minutes is sufficient to observe a change in the direction of growth. The photograph shows a side view (upper part) or the top view (bottom part) of a plate with P. blakesleeanus fruiting bodies growing toward light (arrow).

A super tiny fungi with a bumpy, transparent stalk - looking almost like it's coated in melted sugar - and a tiny, completely circular, candy-yellow top grows on a bit of animal scat. It's surrounded by little mushrooms just like it that are out of focus.

A side note, working on Phycomyces was the next project of Max Delbrück, who won a Nobel prize for determine the nature of mutation. You might wonder, why does a fungus need to sense gravity. Phycomyces grows on dung, near the ground. To get above leaves/debris, it needs to know which way is up, to get its spores airborne. They found that a protein complex, OCTIN, forms large cytoplasmic balls, which sink in the cell 2/8

I really enjoy shooting macro in Winter. Even though there is less activity over all, I can shift my focus towards #moss, #fungi, and #lichens, which can form very science-fictiony micro-landscapes. It's very relaxing.

Here are some things I saw on my walk yesterday:
A closeup picture of some moss (so far unidentified). A bit left of center, there are three sporophytes with wiry setae. The capsule of all three is engulfed in a water droplet, with the outer two having two smaller droplets each on the setae. Across the bottom, the leaves are visible. They look almost like a tiny lawn. Closeup of *Phycomyces* sp., a type of fungus (Mucorales, to be more precise) growing on scat. There are a bunch of immature sporangia which look like bright yellow spheres on pail, semi-translucent pillars (sporangiophores), covered in small water-droplets) To the left and right the bases of sporangiophores belonging to more mature sporangia are visible. They are a bit darker in colour than those of the immature ones. A closeup of *Cladonia* sp. showing the trumpet-like structures typical for the genus. The lichen shows is the usual verdigris colour and the background is almost entirely black. The "trumpets" themselves have uneven fringes with digitate structures emerging from the rim, sometimes forming new "trumpets". It looks kind of like a fantasy castle.

going nuclear on cleaning this bird feeder (sanitize mode on the dishwasher, it has some kind of persistent mold that regrows in the seed all the damn time but i guess that's what i get for exposing grain to pnw weather)
