{𝗮𝙅𝙎𝘿} My notes about the article… What WIRED is claiming (and what it actually shows) Kelly’s thesis is compact: politics is increasingly conducted in the grammar of fandom, and that grammar can be mobilising — while influencer-centric tactics are less reliable The article’s evidence, though, is mostly illustrative, not demonstrative: a handful of vivid anecdotes (a Survivor-style campaign spot; Halo memes from official accounts) stand in for a broad claim about the political media ecosystem.1,3,4 That’s not automatically a flaw — feature writing often works by pattern-spotting. But the piece occasionally slides from ❝here are striking examples❞ into ❝therefore this is the defining language,❞ without the bridging argument you’d need to justify the escalation.1 Where the piece is strongest It correctly targets ❝belonging❞ as the operative variable Even if ❝fandom❞ is a fuzzy label, the mechanism Kelly points to — community identity plus shared symbolic language — is real and politically consequential. Decades of work on affective polarisation show that partisan identity can structure dislike of the out-party and spill into social life (e.g., stereotyping, social distance, and interpersonal judgements), which maps cleanly onto the ❝hero/villain❞ and ❝in-group lore❞ dynamics the article describes.7,8 It makes a useful distinction between creators-as-channels and creators-as-members This is one of the article’s clearest contributions: if a campaign treats creators as interchangeable loudspeakers, the collaboration reads as transactional; if it treats them as authentic community participants, it can seed narratives that supporters feel licensed to remix.1,2 That distinction is plausible — and testable. The big analytical problems (depth critique) Problem A: Novelty Inflation (❝Recently Became❞) Kelly’s ❝recently become a multiverse❞ line is rhetorically punchy, but analytically shaky.1 The distribution infrastructure is new; the social psychology largely isn’t. Affective polarisation research suggests that partisan identity has been intensifying for years and can operate independently of policy ideology — meaning you don’t need fandom culture to get fan-like hostility and loyalty.7,8 So: if the argument is ❝fandom explains today’s politics,❞ it risks misidentifying an outcome (identity-structured animus) as a cause (fandom aesthetics). The more defensible claim is narrower: digital participatory culture supplies formats (memes, lore, remix norms) that express and amplify identity politics that already exists Problem B: Category Blur (Fandom vs Influencers vs Parasocial Ties) The article tries to pivot from ❝tired: political influencers❞ to ❝wired: political fandom.❞1 But the boundary is porous: fandom often runs through influencers, and influencers often activate fandom-like parasocial bonds. In fact, experimental and field evidence suggests influencer messages can increase collective efficacy beliefs and political action intentions — especially when followers have strong parasocial ties to the influencer.9 That is a direct confounder to any broad claim that influencer-led approaches are ❝tired❞ or intrinsically low-resonance.9 Kelly’s own frame basically needs this result: if parasocial ties moderate mobilisation, then influencers aren’t obsolete — they’re one of the main ways fandom-like attachment scales online. Problem C: Weak Causal Inference (Mamdani as Proof) The Mamdani case is interesting, and external reporting supports the basic factual shape of the Survivor-style pitch.2 But the article doesn’t show that fandom-coded ads caused turnout, persuasion, or volunteer mobilisation, as opposed to being a clever garnish on already-effective fundamentals, a novelty spike, or a marker of a campaign that was already strong in field organising.1,2 If you want to claim ❝fandom is the defining language,❞ you need more than one campaign, more than one media moment, and at least a gesture toward counterfactuals (what happened without fandom-format content, or with it in comparable races that failed). Problem D: The headline's ❝Fascism is Fanfic❞ Move is Rhetorically Cute — And Strategically Risky The phrase works as a metaphor for ❝lore-building❞ and conspiratorial world-building. But it also trivialises by aestheticizing: fanfic is derivative storytelling; fascism is a political ideology and movement historically tied to dictatorial power, suppression of opposition, and normalisation of violence.5 If you collapse the latter into ❝fan culture,❞ you risk smuggling in an implicit downgrade: it’s just online narrative play. A stronger formulation would keep the metaphor but explicitly separate aesthetic participation (memes, lore, identity performance) from institutional power (state capacity, coercion, policy, violence). The article gestures at that separation (e.g., DHS/ICE meme recruitment), but the headline nudges the reader toward the wrong abstraction level.1,3,5 Concrete ways the argument could be sharpened Define ❝fandom❞ operationally Is it parasocial attachment? Community meme production? Self-policing in-group norms? If you can’t specify, ❝fandom❞ becomes a vibe label.1 Stop treating ❝influencers❞ as a spent tactic and treat them as one variable in a conditional model The best available evidence suggests effects depend on parasocial strength, message content, and repetition — not simply ❝influencers good/bad.❞9 Separate ❝format❞ from ❝force.❞ Memes are formats; institutions and incentives are forces. The piece sometimes conflates the two.
