🧾 ‼️ Yes, for a few years in the early 1930s, California made OBCs available ONLY to the adoptee, "foster" (meaning adoptive) parent and natural parent, terms used then. In 1935 a new law just crossed out everyone's name — "never mind," no one gets to see the OBC. It's now 90 years and counting.⌛

Was in adoptee support group in early 90s. Stunned when another adoptee support group in CA got my OBC for me at public library. They searched records until found match except parent names changed. Amazing to see her name and what she named me. It opened my heart to hope.

I was already on my own when I found out my adoptive parents got paid $800 a month for me.
They also claimed me as a dependent on their taxes, so I got less for uni.

So... rather than keep waiting for a message that might not come, I bit the bullet and called the phone number I'd found listed for my bio dad. He picked up and, once I convinced him I was really his kid, we spent FIVE HOURS talking and trading stories.
