You may be able to get a piece created to order, if you really want one. I got a dog rhyton made (pic in my next post) from these folks. It took months, but it's really cute. www.reannagteine.com/default.html

Well, I’m sure that joke was used more than once. And I’m sure the other drinkers made jokes about how the person hefting a certain rhyton resembled or acted like a donkey, or ram, or dog.

And I totally forgot that I photographed that rhyton at the Art Institute of Chicago!

Ha, no it's something I read about many years ago. But I think the 'masking' while drinking is written about in antiquity - I've never seen a representation of it in Greek art, though. The handle is always at the bottom of the protome, so that the drinker becomes the animal. 🍷

Vessels such as this were used in drinking parties. Since they didn't have a base, their contents had to be consumed before the vessel could be put down

Yes, the ram was a favorite symbol of strength, among other attributes, in the Greek and Roman cultures (and Assyrian, et al). My favorite representation is probably a ram-headed rhyton - a drinking cup - like the one below.

No, a Greek vessel will always include a complete scene, and the lids - if there are lids - have their own designs. This was a logical way for the owner to continue using his rhyton. I presume the rim had a significant break, so a professional shaved it down and smoothed out the edge.

Yes, it’s a nice detail. The Greek word for this kind of folding stool is diphros. The one on the rhyton is covered in a panther skin, a symbol of Dionysos.

Dionysos has gone California blonde! 🏄‍♂️ Part of a rhyton (drinking horn), he's shown seated and holding a keras (horn) with strangely headless gods. The rim must have broken and been shaved down in antiquity. The yellow hair probably mimics gilded statues of the god. 🏺 1/
