I am proud of the work we did here!!!!

Even prouder of the advocacy we did to have the first A. africanus palaeoproteomic data published in a South African journal, and the abstract was also in Setswana, which meant my mom could read it as well!
Thrilled to share that the 2025 SAJS paper with the highest attention score was led by our @palaeoprotpalesa.bsky.social, with nearly 4,000 abstract views!

The study identified 2 Myr-old proteins from Paranthropus robustus, revealing biological sex & genetic variability

Here's my response:

"Lebala la rona!" is a greeting in Setswana, which means "Good morning to you!" in English.

Setswana is also known as the language of the Tswana people, who are predominantly found in Botswana and South Africa.

Fun fact: The Tswana […]

Wow! Reminds me of how pedagogically in the Setswana alphabet are pronounced with this really exaggerated high F0 youtu.be/YR9R7AkvvxY (unsure if this is more broadly reflected in the tonal system or just a convention)

Except in Botswana, where the name of the currency actually is the Setswana word for rain: pula ☝️🤑

Which in turn is homonymous to my native tongue past tense word for sexual intercourse 🤦‍♂️

We study subword learning for 3 morphologically diverse languages: isiXhosa is agglutinative, Setswana is disjunctive (morphemes space-separated), and English as a typological middle ground. Learning dynamics vary across languages, with agglutinative isiXhosa being most unstable.

I'll throw a spanner into your works 😉

Only English language? If not, I present: Botswana.

In Setswana, "Botswana" means "land of the Tswana people."

Or, to shoehorn into your list, Tswanaland!

… as well as learning Gujurati from neighbours in Kenya. Here in South Africa most white people only speak two languages but the majority of people speak three to six. My black colleagues didn’t only speak close languages to isiXhosa like isiZulu but also Setswana and tshePedi, English, Afrikaans.
