I appreciate this. I remember talking to my Lakota brothers asking how come they celebrate Thanksgiving when I can’t stand the hypocrisy. They said ‘any day is a good day to give thanks’. I get it now. Still don’t celebrate it tho - usually work a good pantry or serve meals in a shelter.

The Crawl Monster Hunter Wilds Review, Page 5: s Upon reaching High Rank, Wilds' story takes a backseat, and the sub-systems, side activities, and number crunching that I loved from previous entries are finally reinstated. Even capturing monsters-a mechanic usually introduced in the early hours of previous games-isn't introduced until the first High Rank mission. Most importantly, High Rank is where Wilds finally makes good on its premise of letting players freely roam and hunt in its seamless open-world environment, which contextualizes almost all of Wilds' biggest mechanical changes. Things like shorter hunt lengths, the sub-camp system, the redesigned cooking system, and many other changes all serve Wilds' more free-form interpretation of the classic Monster Hunter gameplay loop. Multi player also finally becomes feasible-unlike in Low Rank, where the process of playing through story missions is such a hassle that it's better to ignore the on line and play through Low Rank solo. Like almost every other Monster Hunter, playing with others is where the game truly shines. There is a joy in taking down big monsters with your buds. Maybe it's appeasing some ancient part of our brains. Maybe it's just fun to push buttons and see you and your friends' avatars swinging improbably large weapons at impossibly large monsters. I'm not sure. Whatever the reason, it's fun, and it made overcoming the Low Rank slog (mostly) worth it. The grind is another defining aspect of Monster Hunter. Farming monster materials to forge or upgrade equipment is the main vector of player growth, but it's not the only one; there are plenty of other systems to fiddle with, and progress in Monster Hunter is rarely linear. Wilds is no different. In addition to the expected Hunter Rank and gear grinds, Wilds also features side activities like fishing and rare trade requests with NPCs in each settlement that encourage you to explore and gather out in the open world; numerous sub-camp locations t… The Crawl Monster Hunter Wilds Review, Page 6: The Struggle I disagree with the popular sentiment that video game sequels are akin to software updates where new games "fix" or even "replace" older ones. I also am unsure how much I believe games-and series in particular-have an "identity." If they do, then I certainly don't believe their identities are static and think it's valid for things to change, even if I dislike the direction. I prefer to view various entries in a given series as different applications of the same core design principles, narrative themes, and/or aesthetic sensibilities. I try to let each game stand on its own, and strongly believe there are more important reasons to talk about video games than whether they're good/bad or where they rank on a list. However, I also have my own tastes and preferences, and though I am quite fond of specific elements in Wilds and think it's a blast to play, my tastes do not align with the totality of its design philosophy. And it's all classic Monster Hunter's fault. Looking back, it's clear that playing Monster Hunter Freedom was a formative experience that, along with similar games like Armored Core 2 and Final Fantasy XI Online, seeded my current appreciation of-and preference for-hands-off game design and friction. More importantly, Monster Hunter used friction to say something through gameplay. Admittedly, Monster Hunter's message is not profound; the thematic core of the series has always been "It's hard to fight giant beasts with big weapons made of bone and steel," and rarely has it attempted to say more than that-but at least it said something, and that core idea informed every aspect of its design. It forced you to wander remote, hostile environments to find your marks. To unlearn muscle memory from other action games, even down to the control scheme. To commit to your actions. To dig through mud, bones, and shit in hopes you'll find something useful. And if you wanted a better piece of equipment,… The Crawl Monster Hunter Wilds Review, Page 7: With Wilds, the Monster Hunter team has once again rethought Monster Hunter's relationship with friction. But instead of remixing existing mechanics or reintroducing new ones to maintain the friction, the Wilds team sanded (almost) all of it away. The minimap constantly displays monsters at all times, so you never need to track them down at the start of a hunt. The expanded movesets for all weapons and new Focus Mode mean hunters rarely miss an attack, and thanks to the new Wounds mechanic, players can reliably slay even the most brutal monsters in under 10 minutes. Gathering is, at best, an afterthought, as is inventory management. Even grinding for rare monster materials-an aspect of the series I am admittedly less interested in than most fans-is lessened and made more transparent. These changes would be less frustrating if Wilds leaned into its unique mechanics, but it continually undermines its best ideas in an effort to prevent frustration. The biggest disappointment for me is its dynamic time and weather system. Each zone changes based on the current in-game time of day and weather, affecting everything from its appearance to which monsters and gatherables are active. It's a system that harkens back to similar ideas present in Monster Hunter Dos and Monster Hunter Tri, and on paper, one that could add some interesting friction to the experience, forcing players to contend with changes in the weather while out on a hunt. But unlike those older games, Wilds lets players freely select the time and weather while resting at their camp with zero restrictions or repercussions. It renders what is otherwise a cool mechanic into little more than a stage select menu. While there is little to struggle against in Wilds' various gameplay systems, its story is still committed to Monster Hunter's core theme of being a tiny hunter facing down giant, deadly creatures. Characters will warn you about the threat of the newe… The Crawl Monster Hunter Wilds Review, Page 8 Similarly, NPCs will occasionally invite you to share meals-which are presented in lavish, mouth-watering detail. NPC meals often offer better buffs that last longer than simply using the ever-present grill item, but their benefits are negligible, especially if you just want to keep hunting without distraction. It's rare you'll hunt anything dangerous enough to require the absolute best possible buffs, anyway. Streamlining NPC trading and meals undermines one of the key themes the game is trying to convey-that we have to go out of our way and work at building and maintaining a community. I could go on, but I don't need to dissect every mechanic or narrative beat in Wilds. The point is that despite Wilds featuring tons of systems, I never struggled against any of them, and that disappointed me. Not just because I prefer friction in the games I play but because it's obvious the development team wanted to explore Wilds' themes through these gameplay systems. Unfortunately, by sanding away "inconveniences" in order to maximize the "fun," there's rarely any chance to slow down and actually engage with its ideas. If you want players to slow down, you need to apply a little friction.
