it's always amazing how much explanatory power the most vulgar, oversimple reduction of anarchism - power relations are bad, power harms everybody involved and hurts the people at the bottom worst, and that power is the root of most or all social dysfunction - has compared to other theories

Social media reduces the nuances of our individual actions and preferences. I think the best way for us to exist is along the lines of anarchism. I always vote democrat. I get all my vaccines. I also take turmeric pills daily. Studies on it are inconclusive but it seems like a good thing to do 🤷🏻‍♂️

They are fundamentally incapable of mass organization to accomplish social goals and defending society from capitalist domination. It’s exactly why anarchism has never produced anything other than localized shared poverty. They are to be taken as seriously as libertarians, which is not at all.

But the fact that anarchism has retained a relatively unchanged vision and persistent positive social pressure toward that vision while the two dominant political philosophies have been skipping arm-in-arm toward fascism since the reconstruction makes it more legitimate than either of them.

"Unruly mob" is redundant and Kropotkin's conception of anarchism is far removed from mob action. Popular notions of anarchy on social media are as wide-flung and ill-informed as popular notions of democracy. Under the thumb of an oppressor, however, a little chaos may prove beneficial and necessary

I think my biggest worry is how we would have systems to care for people under anarchism. Like healthcare, and social safety nets
February 4, 2026 at 2:02 AM
Because you assume the necessity of violent and authoritarian enforcement to maintain social order, you see this as a gap which needs to be addressed.

But let's take for a moment the idea that 'anarchism has won' seriously, shall we?
February 4, 2026 at 1:47 AM
so you don't know what anarchism is and have never been in anarchist communities whatsoever?
February 4, 2026 at 1:24 AM
Yes, there is. Anarchism trusts that popular people won't take advantage of that, when research shows that abusers rely on social clout to access victims and keep them quiet.

Part of what formal hierachies attempt is a structure that bypasses the human tendency to equate popular and trustworthy.
February 3, 2026 at 10:25 PM
I'm sorry that happened to you. Ime anarchism substitutes social clout for formal structure, and you don't have it, your choices boil down to leaving voluntarily or being shunned. When the populations we're talking about are trans and queer, the risk losing your entire community becomes coercive.

Anarchism isn't really a solution to that problem of needing constant work and collaboration and building mutuality in social spaces to maintain a world worth living in - freedom is always hard won, justice is hard fought, equality takes constantly shifting balancing work.
February 3, 2026 at 6:28 PM
And the fundamental failure of anarchism is its refusal to acknowledge this.

Because we are social beings, there will always be social dynamics. And those dynamics have hysteresis, importing all manner of biases from our childhoods and from society at large. You can't just wish this away

Literally it was coined as a synonym for social anarchism, or for systems close to social anarchism. IIRC as a way to get around anti-anarchist laws. (I think the word was only previously used in the free will vs determinism debate). Then the US Libertarian Party knowingly stole it in the 1970s.

Trump's legitimacy crisis isn't setting up a civil war, it's setting up revolutionary conditions.

With centralist communism and fascism both spent forces, anarcho-syndicalism offers the path to actual social transformation.

The lessons from Spain 1936-9 are still relevant.

Preconditions and Prospects for a Second American Revolution
Perhaps now, more than ever, intellectual observers of American politics and the wider public are troubled by the prospect of a second American Civil War. The increased political polarization with Pre...

Well, sort of a lot of this is downstream of Leninist communism and anarchism becoming the two man strains of “leftism” after the foundation of the Soviet Union the factualism of the Post 1919 revolutionary social Democrats impacting the legitimacy of that movement in general.

Theory is great but Marx, Engels, Proudhon, Bakunin, Stirner and all other architects of revolutionary syndicalism, anarchism, and communism didn’t take into account the existence bots, social media, snd fucking WAYMO level of AI. Purity politics of leftist organizing is the death of revolt.

Social democracy is stereotyped as the restricted town-animal ideology and anarchism as the restricted country-animal ideology.

Something like that.
January 30, 2026 at 8:02 PM
If only humans were wired in a way that anarchism could work as a viable social construct.
January 29, 2026 at 10:28 PM
Fascism grows because social-democracy betrays working people.

I allow myself to express my agreement on this point I am always skeptical of the use of the aesthetics, lexicon, and stereotypes of anarchism on the other hand if for me anarchy is the social, economic and political state of the best possible society in my opinion.

Great research! It needs to be widely read!
'Anarchism, when applied consistently, provides structures allowing for highly advantageous strategies when defending society, making anarchist social structures capable of defence against external invasion when fully established.'

Legitimacy is the result of power and social relations, not ethical imperatives. Who cares if you think the state or money or patriarchy is illegitimate? No one but other anarchists like myself. Tbh the methodological individualism is problematic in anarchism.

"We are anarchists because of a feeling which is the driving force for all sincere social reformers, and without which our anarchism would be either a lie or just nonsense. This feeling is the love of mankind, and the fact of sharing the suffering of others." -Errico Malatesta
