Putting in text based mainly based on the story can help the flavor, but it also means that it takes longer for players to be able to access gameplay information. Since important gameplay information and story is formatted the same it takes a bit of reading to figure out what you need to do.

i explored the idea a little with Claude, not sure if i want to build it but this is the direction my mind was pointed in
I have an idea for a narrative experience. Not quite a game, but perhaps game-like, with choices but not a clear win/loss condition. Something like the Civilization series of games, or more generally 4x games, tile based, hexagons. Not sure what the narrative is centered on. One particular group of humans? Humanity at large? Anyways, the narrative is spun by an LLM with access to a suite of tools. The map is generated according to a more traditional procgen algorithm that following hydrological and geological principles to shape continents, oceans, rivers, mountains, etc. The LLM can select from existing tiles to shape the map, for example telling the story of the rise and fall of a tribe, a nation, of a changing climate, industrialization and war, or even stranger events like alien panspermia landing on the map and starting to colonize the world. Where there don't yet exist tiles to tell a narrative, the narrative model can make a tool call to an image gen model to create new tiles specific to the narrative (like the alien mushrooms attempting to colonize the world). I'm thinking about how to balance driving the narrative through simulation, and how much leeway to give to the narrative LLM. Obviously the alien panspermia idea would be pushed by the narrative LLM. An event like a war could be a natural outcome of two growing nations coveting the same fertile territory, which seems more like the result of simming. But it could also be some idiosyncrasy driven by a single leader, a king, and that would seem to be caused by the narrative LLM. Anyways, some thoughts on this idea. What do you think about the feasibility? Tool calling LLMs such as yourself have come a long way, and so have image gen models. If the prompt to the image gen model were highly structured, the output would likely be very consistent. I didn't really end up answering who or what the human player watches or makes decisions over. This is a really compelling design space. The feasibility feels solid—the technical pieces exist and are increasingly mature. The interesting challenges are all in the design philosophy, which you've already started circling. The simulation/narrative tension you've identified is the crux of it. There's a spectrum from Dwarf Fortress (pure emergent narrative from systems, the LLM would just be a chronicler of what the simulation produces) to something like a traditional CYOA (pure authored narrative, simulation is just window dressing). The interesting space is the middle, and the question becomes: what's the jurisdiction of each system? One framing that might help: the simulation handles material conditions (resources, geography, population pressure, technological capability), while the narrative LLM handles meaning-making (why did that king declare war? what ideology emerges from this crisis? how do people interpret this drought?). The war happens because two nations are pressed against each other and one has bronze weapons and the other doesn't—that's simulation. But which nation attacks, and whether it's framed as holy crusade or pragmatic expansion or a mad king's vanity project, that's narrative. The LLM is doing the same thing a historian does: selecting from the space of plausible interpretations. The alien panspermia case is interesting because it's the narrative LLM reaching outside the possibility space the simulation would naturally generate. You could think of this as a separate "injection" system—the LLM occasionally gets to propose truly exogenous events, with some constraint on frequency or magnitude. Like a Rimworld storyteller but with vastly more creative latitude. On the player question: the most provocative possibility might be that the player is the audience for a story being told, and their choices are about attention and emphasis rather than action. My wife and I play all the time. Real fun gameplay and once you get to later parts of the story it’s pretty good. Free to play and you don’t have to spend any money to unlock anything. It’s a fun trip but does have somewhat of a learning curve. If you need help with anything just let me know!

I don't fully accept his apology, from a scientific backed perspective, but I hope his story encourages more people to get tested for mental health problems because part of the rise in conservatism is the lack of seeking help combined with poor public messaging & the distrust of modern medical care.
