"Jupiter" is the second story in the same collection "Pink" appears in, 焔 (The Flame), which won the Tanizaki Prize in its year. I'm still looking for a publisher for the whole mind-blowing thing!
If you like "Jupiter"—or you're especially looking forward to it—you can enjoy "Pink" (also by Tomoyuki Hoshino and also translated by Brian Bergstrom) totally for free!

I got these for Jólabókaflóðið last night and for Christmas this morning. The in-laws know me so well lol (although I have already read the Tanizaki, but I’m always happy to have different editions).

I think I know what I’ll do for the rest of the day! 🤓

In my festive procrastination I forgot it was #WiPWednesday, so please indulge me in some literary humour probably no-one will get... but it would make my year if anyone did!

Wrote about my favorite non-2025 books that I read this year. Homer, Iris Murdoch, Jun’ichiro Tanizaki, old German fairy tales, and more. countercraft.substack.com/p/the-best-b...

Fellow Oscar Wilde lovers, fans of Poe or tales of the macabre, gothic, & unearthly, I can't recommend enough Junichiro #Tanizaki & his Seven Japanese Tales!

♥️ The Tattooer esp., one of my FAV. short stories where a spider tattoo takes on Dorian Grey-like supernatural qualities. #Books #Authors

I've kept the "worldbuilding" of Maidens deliberately loose and occluded. Many things and people exist in Maidens as they did in the reality of 1980 (the works of Yukio Mishima and Junichiro Tanizaki, Great Britain, the dance crazes of the 60s) but the world is vastly different

Cover Debut! - Bungo Stray Dogs, Vol. 26

Dostoyevsky’s first act is to pierce Fukuchi with the two skill-infused blades lying at his feet! As Tanizaki and the other members of the agency fall one by one, can Atsushi find a way out of this hopeless situation?!

🖊️ In Praise of Shadows — Is Darkness “Evil”?

Today, I’d like to introduce an essay by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki.
And speaking of shadows — have you seen Demon Slayer?
It, too, hides a quiet key.

"We delight in the mere sight of the delicate glow of fading rays clinging to the surface of a dusky wall, there to live out what little life remains to them."

Very broadly for the class it’s that it’s a novel about being a reader and the relationship between the writer and the reader. Each of the false start novels is also a parody of a real novel or writer Calvino admired - Tanizaki, Rulfo, Borges, Chesterton, and others.
