I was there this summer and knew about the reputation for being an alt-right haven, so I kept my eyes out for it.

I didn't see it in my two days of tourism (which, to be fair, could miss a lot). But I also saw explicit signs of pride support, etc. that heartened me.

The ITA stat is (a) first-half only, (b) spending in dollars, and (c) nominal. Those points matter because other U.S. government releases show visitor volume softness in mid/late 2025 (especially Canada), and the U.S. Travel Association’s Fall 2025 forecast (inflation-adjusted) explicitly expects inbound travel spending to fall 3.2% in 2025 and inbound international visits to fall 6.3% — with reduced Canada travel as the main driver.4‑6 Bottom line? ❝Banner year❞ is supportable as shorthand for the administration’s PR posture, but it’s slightly slippery if read as a neutral, full-year, volume-based conclusion. What the Administration Actually Claimed in Public The ITA’s press release language is not subtle: It calls the first half of 2025 ❝record tourism numbers,❞ and attributes that to Trump’s leadership.2 It asserts that ❝tourism records will continue to fall under the Trump Administration❞ (i.e., forward-looking ❝banner year❞ signalling).2 So, even if ❝banner year❞ is not a verbatim quote, the Trump administration’s own framing supports the idea that it was selling 2025 as an unusually strong tourism year (or at least trying to).2 The Statistic Underneath the ❝Banner Year❞ Vibe The ITA press release defines and uses ❝travel exports❞ as inbound tourism expenditures by non-U.S. residents purchasing goods and services while in the United States.2 It then reports (Jan-Jun): 2025 first-half travel exports: $126.9B2 2024 first-half travel exports: $124.1B2 Year-over-year change: +2.2% (≈ +$2.8B)2 Also: first-half 2025 exceeds the first-half 2018 pre-COVID peak ($122.5B) by +3.5%.2 It also notes these inbound expenditures were 7.6% of total U.S. trade in goods and services during that window.2 That is the concrete statistical basis for ❝they were signalling a strong year.❞2 Why ❝Banner Year for Tourism❞ Is a Bit Slippery The ITA’s statistic is real, but its meaning is narrower than the headline-y Trump administration phrase ❝banner year for tourism❞ implies. It’s first-half only. A strong Jan-Jun does not automatically imply a strong Jul-Dec.2 It’s spend, not visitor counts. Spend can rise even if traveller volume falls (prices, trip mix, length of stay, exchange rates, etc.).2 It’s nominal dollars. A nominal increase can coexist with real (inflation-adjusted) declines depending on the price level and mix.2,4 Therefore, the ITA release supports a ❝banner year❞ tone, but not a settled, full-year, volume-based conclusion. What the U.S. government's Volume Indicators Show Around the Same Period NTTO/ITA volume reporting complicates the ❝banner year❞ storyline, especially re: Canada: June 2025 arrivals: total international visitor arrivals to the U.S. down 6.2% vs June 2024; overseas down 3.4%; and Canadian arrivals down 20.2%.3 Yet, cumulative Jan-Jun 2025 arrivals were up 3.0% vs Jan-Jun 2024, while Canadian arrivals over that same half-year were down 12.5% (and non-Canada arrivals were up enough to offset).3 Later in the year, air passenger travel metrics remain soft: August 2025: total non-U.S. citizen air passenger arrivals down 3.3% year-over-year; overseas arrivals down 2.9%; Canada passenger travel down 9.6%.5 Those volume signals are consistent with: ❝first-half spending looked good, but Canada-driven volume weakness was already visible and worsened as 2025 progressed.❞3,5 What Later-2025 Forecasts Said About the Full Year The U.S. Travel Association’s Fall 2025 forecast (explicitly inflation-adjusted to 2024 dollars) states: Inbound international visits: down 6.3% (72.4M in 2024 → 67.9M in 2025).4 Total inbound travel spending: forecast to fall 3.2% to $173B in 2025, with ❝significantly fewer visits from Canada❞ as the primary driver.4 It also flags policy/price/welcome-experience risks (visa fees, wait times, sentiment) as downside factors.4 Tourism Economics’ late-August 2025 revision points in the same direction and puts more emphasis on Canada: Overall inbound travel expected to decline 8.2% in 2025; Canada visitation down 25.2% year-to-date; and inbound travel spending expected to fall 4.2% (a loss of $8.3B).6 You don’t need to pick a winner between these forecasts to make the key audit point: by late 2025, major industry forecasters were not describing

The way things are now I would not even want to subject myself to the invasion of privacy to get a visa, and the risk of travel to the States.
