If you take north american suburbs as they are, EV's and even self-driving EV's, would be a huge improvement: because the baseline is using fossil burning pickup trucks to take the kids four blocks to school. For urbanists, this is dystopian... maybe it's a local maximum?

Many, many municipalities in the Midwest have made these kinds of third spaces illegal. And while we’re lucky to have so many left, it’s often next to impossible to re-open them once they’re closed. Urbanists need to have serious conversations about bars and nightlife if we want to save cities.
These kinds of human scale, mixed-use Midwest dive bars are illegal to open and operate in most American neighborhoods.

Did I think that when I became an adult, that I would have a favourite architect? Definitely not. But then I came across the amazing work that Naama Blonder is doing and well, now, I apparently have a favourite architect. All Bay Area fans of towers in a park might then be able to retrofit the modernist attempts at it, like Embarcadero Center's elevated walkways, to make them wheelchair accessible. Traditional urbanists could build something taller than just pretty sprawl...

I don’t get the urbanists/ architects still on the other site. They are getting shoveled shit every day and pretend everything is normal, still posting about how to make deals and giving advice to robots.

Funny how republicans are never expected to coddle liberals, urbanists, city dwellers, and non-drivers.

Relevance for urbanists: foreign FDs can buy smaller vehicles, more specialized equipment (e.g., for window rescues in 1-stair bldgs), since they can have room for it. But that's much harder tiny single-bay stations – trucks must be one-size-fits-all. www.fireapparatusmagazine.com/the-fire-sta...

I've had a bunch of friends who are staunch urbanists and big on the benfits of license plate cameras. They're right they're more fair than cops and deter reckless driving.

They're wrong that the risk tradeoff is worth it though.

Case in point: happening in Silicon Valley right now:
Amid immigration crackdown, Mountain View discovers unauthorized access to license plate data
Despite repeated assurances of strict protocols and privacy safeguards, the Mountain View Police Department disclosed this week that it had inadvertently violated its own policies and allowed hundreds...

I think most urbanists agree with you, just that we build too many of them.

And it's not like you're on a detour here. You're connecting the dots in ways many of us find helpful, necessary really.

Some of us are trying to do the same. I wrote this article because I wanted urbanists to think more about the relevance of Palestine and the world system for mobility issues.
Mobility Justice and the Big Ride for Palestine
With a focus on how anticolonial social movements can pose solutions to multiple contemporary problems, this essay takes up the Big Ride for Palestine. The principal argument – that the Big Ride co...

I’m aware that some are unfollowing me because I’m posting “political” things (that’s a bizarre word for the evil and insanity that’s happening).

To each their own.

I find it surreal that other urbanists are just posting normal city-building content like everything’s normal. It sure as hell isn’t.

His pod with two urbanists (Michael Schneider of Streets For All and Eli Lipman of MoveLA) are what got me suspect. Dude was grimacing at the idea of less cars and more transit during some points as if these are unprecedented infrastructure ideas :/

After months of local urbanists being attack as outsiders for advocating for more housing in their city, ABQ City Council's land use committee scaled back its planned expansive family-forward zoning change to the praise of Texan transplants bragging about buying into a historic neighborhood in 2018.
