Just realized, no wonder this British history guy I watch on Youtube has no worries plunging into a bunch of scrubby woodlands to track down a Roman road or whatever. No poison ivy worries!

…are you displacing a key population of people? Or are you disrupting a cemetery, in addition to the concerns about the spotted salmon or watersheds. Things like flood & rainwater mitigation and impact on our travel models are considered. So, not just air quality or protected woodlands.

After a century’s absence, pine martens are returning to England as part of a broader recovery across the British Isles. The species’ comeback is restoring balance to woodlands, curbing grey squirrels, and marking a milestone in UK nature recovery. buff.ly/Qw6k8w8

It's one of those albums I can't defend or condemn to people who don't have that deep personal connection. I'm not even from there, but so many of my dearest friends are from the woodlands, and I've spent time there, so I feel it in my bones as Of That Place.

Giraffe. "A giraffe's tongue is a remarkable tool, long (18-20 inches), dark (bluish-purple), prehensile (grasping), and tough, allowing it to navigate thorny acacia." Great fact and photo taken by Ann Warner at Mukuvisi Woodlands in Zimbabwe. #giraffe #wildlife #zimbabwe #nature🦒

Judge Kacsmaryk writes to say that the First Amendment only protects "public discourse necessary to self-government," as he slurs drag and holds it not protected.

“For in this world of lies, Truth is forced to fly like a scared white doe in the woodlands; & only by cunning glimpses will she reveal herself, as in Shakespeare & other masters of the great Art of Telling the Truth,–even though it be covertly, & by snatches."

I cried when I first heard the album. And THEN I found out it was about The Woodlands. It all clicked. I was at their Pavilion show after the Grammy, too. So cathartic.

Also yeah I was so upset when Win Butler was outed as a creepazoid. Had to acknowledge it, because I'm not here for apologetics.

A faith leader in The Woodlands apparently told my mom that he read this article and considered it an incredibly accurate indictment of growing up there.

That gives me so much hope, to know there is pushback against the poisonous culture.

Let's fucking go.
An abbreviated version of this appeared in Houstonia's winter issue. Here's the full piece: a breakdown of some Arcade Fire lyrics from The Suburbs (which is LITERALLY about The Woodlands) and how they accurately capture the experience of growing up there.

I do see mountain bluebirds, when they drop out of the high mountains for the winter. Usually in the juniper woodlands, about 5000-7000 feet elevation. Then when it warms up in the mountains again, they're gone.
