Successive Indonesian governments made vague promises that they failed to keep. Bedjo Untung of the 1965 Murder Victims Research Foundation said, “Not a single 1965 survivor or family could get a court decision to document what they had suffered” www.hrw.org/news/2025/09...
Indonesia’s Mass Killings 60 Years on Still Demand Justice
The 1965-66 massacres were among the darkest days in Indonesian history. Marxism and communism remain banned in the country and continue to be applied to target critics of the government.

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at the University of Michigan announced today that all of its federal funding has been cancelled.

The announcement drips with disbelief and sadness, as you might imagine. The notion that the Center "doesn't advance American interests" is beyond inane.
I am sad and frankly, ashamed, to have to tell you that on Wednesday evening I received word from the US Department of Education that all the federal funding to the Center had been cancelled. Every other area studies center at U. Michigan and all of the SE Asian Studies National Resource Centers in the US received the same cancellation letter at the same time. In their own words, the administration decided that our programs, “‘are inconsistent with Administration priorities and do not advance American interests or values.’ As such, the Department has determined that continuation of the following programs is not in the best interest of the Federal Government.” Perhaps there is one amongst you who agrees with this statement. I have not met that person. I have met many of you who have had your lives changed by the opportunity to learn Southeast Asian languages with the support of FLAS fellowships. Who were able to spend semesters in Ann Arbor on leave from your institutions in SE Asia, working with our fabulous library resources. Who conducted Master’s and PhD thesis research with support from the Center and from the Fulbright-Hays Grants. Who have enjoyed the Gamelan and Rondalla performances that cap our SE Asian music courses. The funds for these undertakings are now terminated.

Women Work Fewer Hours Than Men

By me and @postcardsbybecky.bsky.social

Read more cartoons! ---> #PoliCartoon

Panel 1
In the foreground, a middle-aged man types on his laptop. Behind him, a yelling child is calling to the man, while the child’s mother, holding an infant, shushes him. A caption shows us what the man is typing.
JUNIOR: Dad! Dad! DAD!
MOTHER: Junior, let your father work.
CAPTION: “The ‘wage gap’…”

Panel 2
Same scene. The boy has calmed down, and the mother is bringing him along by the shoulder as she exits. The mother looks exhausted, and the baby is pulling on her hair.
MOTHER: I’m going out – I have to meet with Junior’s teacher and do groceries and pick up your dry cleaning and…
CAPTION: “…mostly disappears….”

Panel 3
The mom has departed, but the man, still typing, turns his head to call out after her.
MAN: Oh, the nursing home left a message about my mother… Would you take care of that?
CAPTION: “…when you control for the fact…”

Panel 4
The man turns back to typing.
MAN (thought balloon): Hope she makes stew for dinner tonight.
CAPTION: “…that women work far fewer hours than men.”

okay so you know how the media has a problem with taking snippets of scientific studies out of context and writing articles which mislead the public?

now imagine a computer program is doing that when you ask it questions about scientific literature but also it makes stuff up.

People are melting down at a Tribune article about CHSD 230 considering adding Arabic to its language learning electives. I wasted time in the comments, which I normally avoid doing since it's useless and awful, but it led to possibly the funniest thing anybody's ever said to me about France.
A screenshot of Facebook comments. The first, from somebody named Marcella, says "Wake up America! The encroachment is insidious and dangerous to our ideals and beliefs."

In reply, Soren says "That's why we turned French when they started offering French classes, right?"

Replying to Soren, somebody named Ken says "The French don't have a record of colonizing and conquering countries; and forcing their culture on the natives. Arabs do."

Following the Jakarta protests, Gedung MPR/DPR (Parliament building) on G-Maps was labeled beban negara ("country's burden"), kantor pengangguran ("office of the unemployed"), pejabat kontol ("dick lawmakers"), markas penjahat ("villain's lair") and ornamen mmk tembem (yea I'm not translating that).
A screenshot of the desktop version of Gedung DPR/MPR or the People's Representative Council building in Jakarta on Google Maps. The building is marked with several creative names such as kantor pengangguran, seminar pengambilan aset rakyat, gedung pejabat kontol, markas penjahat, and ornamen memek tembem. The last basically means fat cunt, I'm sorry. A screenshot of the mobile version of Gedung DPR/MPR or the People's Representative Council building in Jakarta on Google Maps. Political unrest and protests in Indonesia are usually followed by these artistic expressions. Probably harder if you don't speak the language, but the diverse styles, wording, rawness...you can tell the difference from propaganda.

A watercolor illustration of a rideshare rider in a green jacket and helmet, delivering a bag of food. He is standing in front of a meadow with blue sky and bright sun, a pair of gentle hands about to embrace him. The text below says "Pesanan Anda sudah Tiba", or "your order has arrived" in Indonesian. An illustration of a man in green and black rideshare rider lied on the street, blood under his head and flowing out of his mouth, a halo floating above his head. Grey clad legs of the cops can be seen nearby. An illustration of a man in a green and black rideshare rider jacket, his left arm was wounded yet raised in a fist. There is a wall of blood in front of him. His jacket says: Keadilan untuk Rakyat, an Indonesian sentence that means justice for the people. An illustration of a man in a green and black rideshare rider jacket and helmet, floating in the space while holding his delivery bag. There is a red tire track across his body. The numbers 1312 can be seen above him.
