The chapter is part of the volume "The Canada Model and Post-Brexit EU Trade Relations Insights from the 'Other' Transatlantic Partner", edited by Nanette Neuwahl and Amy Verdun.

CETA has always been much more than "just" a trade agreement. Its history reveals as much about the inner workings of the EU as an international actor and multilevel legal order, as it does about attempts to forge closer relations between "like minded" partners in geopolitically challenging times.

New publication 🇨🇦🇪🇺: In this chapter, I address "The many meanings of the ‘Canada model’", where I present #CETA as a case of

1) ‘Gold standard’
2) Like-mindedness
3) Cautionary tale
4) Autonomy

Right on time 9 years after CETA was signed, and 8 since its provisional application began!

Budapest? Not everyone may remember this, but in 1994 Ukraine already got assurances of territorial integrity from the US, Russia and the UK. In Budapest. Maybe I’m superstitious, but this time I would try to find another place.

In conclusion, while I'm still quite confident about the future of Europe (and the EUI), I'm not so sure about the Economist.

After reflecting on this article, rather than wondering about "What is Europe?", I find myself asking "Was that journalism?"

I wish you all a good Sunday!

4️⃣ What's up with that "Los Alamos" comparison? Nothing ever coming out of the EUI, not even the articles with the most staggering citations numbers, ever killed tens of thousands of people (to my knowledge at least). Moreover, it's in the desert and its wines are no match for even mediocre Chianti.
jorislarik.bsky.social
3️⃣ I question this alleged need for a "channel" from the EUI to the EU institutions for ushering in new officials. We have already the College of Europe as the more practice-oriented graduate institute. Moreover, there is intrinsic value in experts with a healthy level of distance from practice.
jorislarik.bsky.social
2️⃣ On real world relevance and "animating vision", I cannot think of a place more influential than the EUI to have framed the debate on EU law, and how it relates to national law and international law ("Integration through law", "constitutionalization thesis", "multilevel governance" etc).
jorislarik.bsky.social
1️⃣ A British establishment publication making fun of the EUI for being an "ivory tower" detached from the "real world" blows my mind. If you point one finger (or "magic wand", because Harry Potter metaphors...), you point the other four at drinking Pimms wearing a cloak at a high table.

To talk about trade in Britain without mentioning the EU is a bit like trying to explain the solar system without mentioning the sun.

While I'm glad the NATO Summit was a success, using it as a platform for brushing aside the prohibition to use force – a core norm of international law – is problematic, as I stress in this brief interview. NATO's Article V is important for our security, but so is Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.

...perhaps being able to mount operations further afield soon. Strategic autonomy.

The scale of this is perhaps not appreciated, both militarily and politically. 🇪🇺 defence spending is bigger than China's. Only the US surpasses it.

It is about 4.5 times that of the UK.

Von Der Leyen’s speech in Aachen is really stunning. “It is time for Europe to rise up once again. To rally around the next great European project. Thus, I believe that our next great era – the next great unifying project – is about building an independent Europe.” 👀
