I was told not to teach a class on the intellectual histories of Zionism and Anti-Zionism next year - not because they doubted I could teach it fairly, but because it would attract too many politicians scrutinizing the syllabus.

A society where that is a valid fear is no longer fully democratic.

Portland is small time compared to Memphis, Houston, Little Rock, Salt Late City, Nashville, Indianapolis, Charlotte, and 50 other cities.

In fact that's the whole playbook. Take a great public system (education), underfund it until it breaks, say it doesn't work, sell it off to private gain, repeat. Playing with shutdowns feels like abetting.

Although the meaning of the word has evolved to center violence by non-state actors, its origins are in the state use of terror.
