Sex scenes are almost never "gratuitous" or "unnecessary." You learn things about characters and relationships during sex that you can't really learn any other way, such as whether they're into fisting.

Fangs of Fortune is very queer not in the least because of his portrayal of of a very unearthly great demon. He also does a great turn as the cutest baby dragon in Back from the Brink but he is not convincing in the straight romance in that. 😅
