Platner's tattoo is one half of the story (albeit a pretty blatant one) but his being a Blackwater merc should've been setting off alarm bells too. Contract killer is a heck of a work history, even by US government standards.
Yeah the DNC sucks and I'm sick of centrists too but fun fact, a coordinated smear campaign about your Nazi tattoo and history with Blackwater "War Crimes Inc" only works if you have a Nazi tattoo and worked for War Crimes Inc
This is an amazing thread Sheryl. I grew up in the south around many people like this. Luckily that didn’t include my parents.
I know a lot of people with Platner are talking about the need to give grace to people coming out of right wing extremist environments. To an extent, I agree. I grew up in one, after all. My parents put me through conversion therapy. I didn't choose to have right wing racist bigots for parents.

@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social on making public transit accessible: "I think the way that you move around the city, it influences the way in which you see the city. Too often if you're riding around only in a car with tinted windows, the only New Yorker you might see is a reflection of yourself."
Zohran Mamdani, the Internet’s Mayor
Mere months ago, New York’s mayoral front-runner was polling right next to “Someone Else.” He spoke to WIRED about building a social media machine, Big Tech capitulation, and learning from Eric Adams.

The most liberal approach to the Palestinian question from any mainstream Israeli party is that of South African Bantustans, which would actually be a major improvement over the current situation.
Oftentimes I see people cite Yair Lapid as evidence of a meaningful opposition to Netanyahu. Here is Yair Lapid's vision of peace in his own words last year.

Then, here is what Netanyahu said in 2018.

Compare them.

Now reading: “We” by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Written in 1921, it was the first book banned by Soviet censors. Zamyatin eventually emigrated to France, likely thanks to Gorky putting in a good word for him with Stalin. “We” is sometimes called “the Russian 1984” because of similar themes

this is a good thread from jarrett, but i do think that the biggest issue is that many people (esp. the type of person writing this article) cannot or will not distinguish between "seeing a homeless person sleeping or acting erratically" and "crime"

For sure some of the legacy media outlets are downplaying the protests because they’re aligned with Trump, but I think an even bigger factor is how many elite journalists have a patrician disdain for the idea that politics can happen in the streets and not just the CNN green room.

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.
