Throwback to when a local 78-year-old driver ran over three fellow seniors within a week.

One can hope that the decision to allow the Adams administration to remove a protected bike lane could be used for good by future mayors
dangbeetle.bsky.social
Horrible. I’d love to see the Mamdani admin do a truly rapid response street safety approach where if something like this happens, DOT is able to just go emergency mode and immediately redesign it, like really immediately

Lately, we’ve heard a lot about the dangers of e-bikes and CitiBike from our neighbors.

But the most dangerous thing on our streets—by far—are people driving cars.

The only thing separating a “good” driver from a “bad” one is luck that the former hasn’t been involved in a crash recently.

Last week, drivers ran over two high school students on Narrows Ave. in Bay Ridge.

Narrows Ave. is an overly wide street with fewer traffic control devices than parallel streets making it a favorite alternate route for impatient and speeding drivers.

It happened around 2:49 p.m. at Narrows Avenue and 81st Street.

McDonald Ave is dangerous because of all the cars and trucks.

Slowing the cars and trucks and/or reducing their numbers will make it safer for ever—even people in cars.

“We are pro-car. We just think all these extra lanes and on-street parking spaces are a bad idea”

"We are pro-bikes. We just think this is a really bad idea."

It's like NIMBY Mad Libs! As we write in the book, it's actually somewhat encouraging that bike lane opponents can't come up with new things to say.
Brooklyn neighbors fear new bike lanes on busy McDonald Avenue will be dangerous
Windsor Terrace neighbors are growing concerned the city's plan to redesign the busy four-lane corridor with bike lanes will make it less safe.

I agree with this and it’s why the city should use its leverage to require all new TLC licensed vehicles have ISA to eliminate speeding.

This is good news.

A few vehicles with Intelligent Speed Assist can have an outsized impact on safety bc they’ll also prevent vehicles behind them from speeding.

While Paris was busy creating 300 pedestrianized and low-traffic school streets, New York did absolutely nothing to address the perpetually unsafe conditions caused by parents driving their kids to school—a hazard they know exists.

DOT blatantly disregarded their own public comment process.

Over 90% of over 650 online comments on NYC’s rulemaking website opposed this rule. Despite this overwhelming opposition, DOT says: "no changes were made to this rule in response to the comments received."

If the car has GSA-issued, U.S. Government plates you can contact [email protected].

The cops aren’t going to write themselves parking tickets.

But you can report placard abuse and falsified 311 complaints to
[email protected] and [email protected]. CC: the local council member’s office when you do.

how a single one of these cars is allowed to be parked here, and yet even parking in a lane of traffic apparently doesn’t matter to NYPD.

Today is your last chance to tell CB 7 you want a bike lane on McDonald Ave.

Good stuff. And this merely counts people who "primarily" take a bike to work. If you bike to a train and then to work or only use a bike to take the kids to school or get groceries, you're not counted. Add that in and we're making some excellent progress. Lots more to do, of course!
