Conservative tech lord Thiel said tighter financial regulations “were a sign that a singular world government has begun to emerge that could be taken over by an Antichrist figure who could then use it to exert control over people.” Via WashPost
Inside billionaire Peter Thiel’s private lectures: Warnings of ‘the Antichrist’ and U.S. destruction

The Orphan Crusher is here to stay. If we don’t feed more Orphans to the Crusher the Orphan Crushing industry will die. It’s time to wake up to the reality of the Orphan Crusher. The Orphan Crusher is worth billions. We need to teach people to use the Orphan Crusher. It’s here to stay.

The economy is not going to recover in time to give Luxon an election boost.
This means Winston, Luxon, and Seymour will try to stir up culture wars to distract us.
Don't get sucked in - just hammer home the lousy economic performance, the incredibly high cost of living, and the general despair.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

this was called Cohost—not enough people used it or spent money on it relative to the amount of money it cost to (1) pay its 4 employees a living wage for their labor; and (2) keep the site running, so it died, nothing like it has taken its place at the scale it existed, and now we're here

Aotearoa would be a vastly better place if politicians and their families were required to use the public education and healthcare systems.

If a little girl covered in ash appears hanging upside down from your ceiling dripping black bile and whispering in Latin, lay a mirror flat on the ground beneath her and count backwards from 24.

This works most of the time.

Nothing so grand as Australia. The future is apparently kumara farming in Dargaville.

I wish I was joking.

Asked where the jobs were for these young people, the prime minister pointed to the kūmara industry, which he had recently visited in Dargaville.

"[They're] desperate to get young people into it, find out that young people show up for a work for a little bit and then bugger off and don't show up the rest of the week. That's what we're trying to get, we're trying to get those young people connected with work so they can actually learn to show up on time, have a work ethic, join a team, work hard, and get some self-worth from it."

I have absolutely no doubt it is hard to live on the pension, Verity. But the pension is still the *best* of our benefit payments.

Also I think that maybe you mistook some of your monthly expenses as weekly expenses.

The article is here: www.stuff.co.nz/money/360842...
So I added up the costs of keeping me and my partner in power, water, phone, internet, rates, insurance, petrol and gym membership… $505 a week. Add $380 for groceries and that’s $885.

someone should redo the projections for outcomes for young people in New Zealand where 50% of them move to Australia as soon as they can afford it, because that’s what’s actually going to happen

This is a policy with no basis in any analysis. It's designed to look tough. It actually makes them look thoughtless and out of touch. It's arbitrary, mean, and simply designed to disguise the fact that the government is failing young people. Is this what being back on track feels like?

#nzpol The government has announced that 18/19 year olds, who live in a household where the parents earn $65,529 or more, can't claim jobseekers support. If both parents work 27 hours on the minimum wage - $634 a week - they will be expected to now financially support their adult offspring. A 🧵
