Who could have imagined that firing live artillery rounds over the planet's second busiest roadway might be a bad idea
NYT - A 155-millimeter shell fired during a live-fire demonstration at Camp Pendleton prematurely detonated, dropping fragments of the shell on a CHP vehicle and motorcycle that were part of Vice President Vance's protective detail. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/19/us...

Pete Hegseth conducted a live fire exercise over I-5 as part of a made-for-Fox stunt for him and Vance which had a misfire that struck a Highway Patrol vehicle and could have killed people?

Who could have foreseen this?

i think people sometimes overstate the likelihood of america’s credibility being lost forever; forever is a very long time. but i think the next dem AG will need to commit effort and resources to investigating the full truth of the second admin and prosecuting them accordingly, starting with rubio.
This story is extraordinary even by 2025 standards. Marco Rubio, the nation's top diplomat, made a deal with Bukele and agreed to renege on informant agreements in a years-long DOJ investigation into MS-13, totally undercutting credibility of such agreements.

Rubio promised to betray U.S. informants to get Trump’s El Salvador prison deal
To secure U.S. access to President Nayib Bukele’s notorious CECOT prison, Rubio agreed to turn over several MS-13 leaders central to a long-running Justice Department investigation.

more combative messaging from Ds, it looks like.
The so-called Homeland Security Secretary is a corrupt and malignant fraud.

This video she sanctioned is fake.

Manipulated by cowards who hide behind masks while violating the law.

For a 155mm shell to explode prematurely isn't exceptionally rare, it's a thing that happens sometimes. Which is why you don't fire them over civilian freeways for shits and giggles.

I keep seeing ads for Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on 60 Minutes tonight to discuss the "peace deal." Wonder if they'll update it with the news today that the ceasefire has been broken? "We taped this interview before the entire deal fell apart, but here it is anyhow..."

The whole thing as a vanity exercise to demonstrate a show of force before the No Kings events.

DOD had said that firing bombs over a highway was safe; state officials disagreed and shut down the highway, used by about 80K people daily. Turns out the state officials were right.

No matter how much I hate Trump Zelenskyy has to hate the man more than any of us.

everyone: we don’t want kings

rightwing media: this is a confusing protest line, no one is claiming trump is a king

Remember April 2009 when about 250,000 people took to America’s streets in Tea Party rallies and the media was like “oh man, the Dems are in trouble?” Approximately 28X as many people took to the streets to protest Trump yesterday. Didn’t even make the NYT front page.
In April of 2009 I observed the Tea Party rally in Salem. As this front page story says, there were a couple hundred people there. This past weekend in Salem there were roughly 2-3000 people at the Hands Off rally. Yet the Tea Party coverage seemed to take that event far more seriously.

Outrageous that as soon as Bari Weiss took over CBS, 60 Minutes did a sit-down with Kushner and Witkoff on an Israeli-Hamas "deal" that fell apart almost as soon as the interview concluded. This is laughable.

No Republicans should ever be permitted to live down Trump. It should be a generational shame that haunts their descendants.

The idea that we should move on from this open criminal who waged war against his own country and global democracy *while he is still waging it* is quantum complicity.
Lead front-page story in today's NYT

Time-travel dept:

-I don't remember front-page NYT stories "It's 1993, and GOP Is Still Running Against Clinton." That's what they did, for huge mid-term win.

-Nor "It's 2009, and GOP Is Still Running Against Obama." Which they did, for huge win.

Weird.

I think there's also a huge reluctance to acknowledge that Trump stands for a very real, material, active, vision of america.

like, it's not just the one guy. it's white supremacist oligarchy. opposing that is in itself an alternative vision.
There's just no way to exaggerate how cooked your brain has to be to think like this. Trump is an unprecedented, law-breaking, norm-breaking, increasingly demented maniac who is destroying this country's basic institutions. Like, right now! As we speak!

But media elites find that boring.

I take some pleasure in knowing that the ~50 conservative Oregonians who showed up at this event in Salem to celebrate the guy who paid for 80 busses of people to attend the January 6, 2021 rally...think that the ~10,000 people who attended the No Kings rally 200 yards away were all paid by Soros.
Oregon conservatives promoted this event for weeks. They organized a caravan from locations across the state for it. The pictured Christian Nationalist preacher promoted it in his Salem church. According to other news outlets and my own observations, about 50 people showed up. Sad.
