Bill Nye should run for governor and then blow all his political capital on passing an income tax
robertcruickshank.com
Trump 2.0 has really exposed how brittle and broken the West Coast states' tax systems are. WA, OR, and CA all have a 1% property tax cap. WA has a sales tax but no income tax; OR has an income tax but no sales tax. It is not possible to effectively resist Trump without fixing these tax systems.

The news has sent counties throughout California into a panic. The state is bracing to lose hundreds of millions of dollars for permanent housing, which is the one thing experts agree on as the most effective way to solve homelessness. https://cal.news/4nBKuZI

Trying to imagine Harris "joking" about bulldozing some white peoples' homes and how that "joke" would be received

New in PN: He's never "just joking"

"Trump is an aspiring autocrat with obvious physical and mental issues, but Johnson and his Republican cronies are insulting our intelligence about it."
He's never "just joking"
And Republicans know it, even as they play dumb.

Most of us know the ….SPACE clip from Command and Conquer but I like how there’s three solid minutes of him being delighted with what he was asked to do

Which is wild because MAGA will forget all about him the moment their isn't a headline per day. Or they can just lie and no one will challenge it

It is incredibly clear that Stephen Miller has decided this guy must be tortured, and nothing else will suffice, otherwise the Trump administration looks weak.

Dude is a literal war criminal.

So Kilmer Abrego-Garcia will not challenge a deportation to Costa Rica, who has agreed to for him residency, but DHS won’t agree to send him there because it’s not cruel enough.

“I … met with the governor, met with the mayor, met with the chief of police, and the superintendent of the highway patrol. They’re all lying, and disingenuous, and dishonest people,” Noem said, because they wouldn’t back up her baseless claims that the streets were overrun with terrorists.

Did not know this about Old Bay
The origins of the company can be traced back to Wertheim, Germany, where Brunn started a wholesale spice and seasoning business selling to food industries, seeing an opportunity as spices were in especially short supply amidst hyperinflation in the aftermath of World War I. 9] Due to rising antisemitism as the Nazi Party rose to power, the company moved to Frankfurt, Germany; 1°1 however, on the night of November 9, 1938, a massive pogrom against Jews, known as Kristallnacht, led to Brunn being arrested by Nazi soldiers and sent to Buchenwald concentration camp. "
According to Brunn's son, Gustav's wife paid a large sum of money to a lawyer for him to be released; as they had already applied for and received American visas, they were able to escape with their two children to New York City and later Baltimore, Maryland, where Brunn had family.!'! There, having brought with him only a small spice grinder, 8! Brunn founded the Baltimore Spice Company and produced the
"Delicious Brand Shrimp and Crab Seasoning", which was later renamed Old Bay. 12[13]

From 2016:

Milo Yiannopoulos: "The Jews run everything…the Jews run the banks…the Jews run the media…this is not in debate. It’s a statistical fact."

Ben Shapiro: "So Milo seems to be making two points here. The first: not all stereotypes are rooted in falsehood (true)."

Fascinated how the guy who made superstars of Matt Walsh, Candace Owens, Jordan Peterson, and Michael Knowles thought that unfettered racism and every phobia in existence wouldn't eventually include anti-semitism

The deportation order is based on Vedam’s conviction for murder—a crime he did not actually commit and for which he’s now been wholly exonerated. He entered the US at 9 months old and was a legal permanent resident before his conviction. We are so, so, so far from the light of justice.

After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.

i gotta say, it is a societal level sorta humiliation that education about authoritarianism hasnt prevented any authoritarianism and instead it has caused people saying with their full face that the public's opposition to authoritarianism makes the average citizen a member of "the thought-police"

Obviously we can't order the enslavement of authors who defend slavery but we should be able to force them into a lifetime of Amazon warehouse work
joolia.bsky.social
Doug Wilson co-authored a (plagiarized) book that defended the institution of slavery *as it was practiced in the antebellum South*. This is how Douthat introduced the subject while providing him with the NYT's platform:
Douthat: So, just to take a related example, one of the controversies of many that you’ve been mixed up in has to do with slavery, and whether slavery is absolutely forbidden by the Bible, absolutely forbidden to Christians, or whether it is critiqued, but allowed for.

Wilson: Right.

Douthat: And you think it is critiqued, but allowed for.

Wilson: Right.

Douthat: On this, on a straightforward reading of the New Testament, I would agree with you. I would say, pretty clearly, there is a pretty clear path from the message of the Bible to the abolition of slavery. But there is no moment in the New Testament when Jesus insists on the manumission of slaves.

Wilson: Right.

My version of this is that Vought, Yarvin etc represent a kind of braindead right-Gramscianism, which leaves out all the interesting subtleties and treats civil society _only_ as a realm of indoctrination, where one ideological master-narrative can readily be substituted for another.
jamellebouie.net
a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society
thomaszimmer.bsky.social
What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

Also the book reminds readers that one of the reasons there were Jewish communities in the Balkans was that the Ottomans invited them there after expulsion from Spain, only for modern history to cast them out again
