The word doctor comes from the Latin docēre, meaning “to teach.” It was first used for scholars who earned the highest degrees at universities. Medical doctors came later, once medicine became an academic discipline. Doctorate came first.

It’s okay to recognize & respect both.

Today my daughter's preschool is holding a farewell assembly for one of her classmates whose mother has no choice but to self deport. The school is hoping it will be joyful in tone, so we might make this less upsetting for this 3 year old.
