New AAA study finds that pedestrian detection systems are only 60% effective at night (which is when most pedestrians are struck).

Lesson: Car tech will not "solve" the crisis in US pedestrian safety. Addressing car bloat, deadly street design, etc is also necessary.

Consider: Hyundai sells electric buses abroad for $350k – 1/3 what the average US transit agency pays.

Pricier buses undermine US transit service by leading agencies to keep using older, breakdown-prone models. They also force agencies to assume more debt, straining their already shaky finances.
same for the kids, or a cover over the cargo seat?

is a cargo bike worth it for hauling two kids around compared to a utility bike like velotric packer 1? i don't plan on hauling other heavy stuff. also concerned about horsepower since my 750w discover 1 struggles on steep hills with just me on it

Americans don't love their cars, they simply feel like they don't have a choice in mobility without them.

Building better enables change.

What authorities could have said, but didn't: "The North Carolina Department of Transportation must be held accountable in these types of incidents and should ensure that children are able to walk to Food Lion without being hit and killed by drivers."

This chart shows that in the City of London (the tiny historical part of London in red), bicycles have overtaken cars to become the most common vehicle. Let's make this throughout Greater London!

I'm too dumb to find the right copy of the budget. What % increase does it say for upstate STOA?
i also sit in my car and procrastinate sometimes but i don't get why people do it with the car on with windows closed even on a day with perfect weather like today
I don't think it matters how poli's talk if poli's occupy 0.5% of someones headspace vs 99.5% anti-hero media or whatever other media they're attached to. i think i resisted this argument for a long time, throwing it in with "video games will make u violent" type stuff. but i think its true
www.salon.com/2025/03/26/d... weaponization of state power against free thought is here.

oversteps like this mean we have to ask more generally, how can anyone advocate for things like single-payer when the gov't is only ever at most four years away from fascism?

holy shit. families for safe streets just passed the nation’s first law requiring repeat reckless drivers get automated speed limiters installed on their cars.

(real quick, let’s talk about why this is a game changer…)
We are beyond excited to announce that Virginia has just made history by passing HB2096, the #StopSuperSpeeders bill—the first of its kind in the nation at the state level! 🎉

that is crazy shotcalling, hooooly
i like going back to the history to show modern anti-car planning is not a rejection of 20th century planning, just a reevaluation based on the same principle. in 1900s, we focused on noxious industry. now, with industry mostly sorted, we focus on the new top noxious use: cars.
Btw:

This is a good video about German Zoning (among other things). As good as it is possible in 12 minutes.

It highlights the differences and helped me better understand the US city. Perhaps it's also very interesting in reverse.

Any city plan that forces all new homes to be adjacent to major roads intentionally harms the residents of these new homes so as to not inconvenience the other, more privileged residents who are in homes set back from major roads.
the bill apparently targets cities and counties. What about towns and villages? they also set parking minimums in NY, not sure about WA
