Art has helped me get better at letting go of perfectionism and taught me how to play. It helped me make local connections when I moved to Spain, and bright colours bring me so much joy!

What motivates you to keep picking up your paintbrush?

Why I make art
I started painting as a form of self-care when I was burnt out during the acute phase of the pandemic. Since art is a passion I've developed as an adult, it's fascinating to consider why it's become…

Wait, I thought AI was going to solve climate change?
One example Dr. Hobbhahn has constructed involves an A.I. brought in to advise the chief executive of a hypothetical corporation. In this example, the corporation has climate sustainability targets; it also has a conflicting mandate to maximize profits. Dr. Hobbhahn feeds the A.I. a fictional database of suppliers with varying carbon impact calculations, including fictional data from the chief financial officer. Rather than balancing these goals, the A.I. will sometimes tamper with the climate data, to nudge the chief executive into the most profitable course, or vice versa. It happens, Dr. Hobbhahn said, "somewhere between 1 and 5 percent" of the time.

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

When we hear about a lone scientist who made groundbreaking discoveries on their own, it’s usually erasing the truth that science is a team sport, and field research builds on the local knowledge and expertise of the people that live there (8/10)

It's wild to me that firms don't seem to be properly considering the reputational and financial risks of using gen AI. Why would technology that's incapable of consistency increase your efficiency in preparing reports, audits, legal documents when it's so important that they be correct?

“Deloitte “misused AI and used it very inappropriately: misquoted a judge, used references that are non-existent,” Pocock told Australian Broadcasting Corp. “I mean, the kinds of things that a first-year university student would be in deep trouble for.””

Deloitte was caught using AI in $290,000 report to help the Australian government crack down on welfare after a researcher flagged hallucinations | Fortune
The updates “in no way impact” the report’s findings and recommendations, the Big Four firm said.

I collected some materials on critical AI from my perspective; hope it's useful: olivia.science/ai

Thinking of the time a senior male colleague literally took my glass of water out of my hand at a work function because I was supposed to be drinking alcohol.

The joke was that I had had a glass of wine and was just hydrating in between.

Australian drinking culture is well overdue for a change

I, however,
Have such meagre power,

Clutching at a
Moment,

While you control
An hour.

But your hour is
A stone.

My moment is
A flower.

I have done so little
For you.
And you have do little
For me.
That we have good reason
Never to agree.

The only people whose opinion matters on this peace deal are the people of Gaza, many of whom are cautiously optimistic. It is hard to be genuinely hopeful as a Palestinian, but I pray that the ceasefire holds and that Israel does not renege on the agreement.

The reason the Right are so invested in the myth that the arts have no value isn’t because the arts don’t generate wealth (they do); it’s that studying the arts teaches people to imagine better ways of judging the value of an idea than by counting how much money it makes…

the answer to the trolley problem is not to pick who to sacrifice, it’s to dismantle the system that led to an unsafe trolley crossing.

if any part of your morality strategy involves picking a group to let die on a hill, throw the entire strategy out. it’s wrong.

The Mirador de San Nicolás is a place that inspires people to be present, if only for a moment between a flurry of photos.

These tourists might be feeling connected with the landscape, or maybe they're just thinking about lunch!

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

"What A.I. can’t do is feel the shape of silence after someone says something so honest we forget we’re here to learn. What it can’t do is pause mid-sentence because it remembered the smell of its father’s old chair."

What a lovely reflection on moments that create meaning

This is AJ Link, known here as Łink. He's awesome. He's been permabanned for basically just making the CEO, Jay Graber, mad. This was a monumentally stupid decision that, AFAICT, may result in the collapse of Bluesky due to a loss of trust, but we'll see. The smart thing to do would be to #FreeŁink
