The thing abt "don't use black for shading" is that if you use black for soft shading it WILL indeed make your drawing look muddy as hell BUT if you use black for rlly dark and defined shadows it'll turn into the coolest thing anyone's ever made

Subtext is a lot more commonly picked up on than you’d expect. I’ve had people guess things about plot points that were going to come up in canon later quite a few times. I generally think it’s super important to respect your reader’s intelligence and curiosity; They’ll enjoy your work more for it.
