Remember “Move fast and break things”?
It built Silicon Valley and now it’s breaking everything else.

In my new #CodeAndConscience issue, I talk about why our culture of reckless innovation needs to shift and how we can build with conscience, not chaos.

A true systems thinking approach to building tech products may have prevented (or at least predicted) so many of the unintended consequences we see with each AI product they throw at the wall. In this Ted Talk, I will...

The first Jim Crow was enacted under the auspices that racism is a necessity and a great and natural moral good.

The second one is being enacted under the auspices that racism doesn’t exist if you claim you don’t see it and anyone who questions your motives about that is oppressing you.
Roberts has always felt that the suggestion that white people might discriminate on the basis of race is a profound moral injustice, much greater than black people being denied the right to vote bsky.app/profile/jayw...
Everything about John Roberts's approach to the Voting Rights Act makes sense when you remember that John Roberts has has always been hostile to the Voting Rights Act, never believed it was appropriate, and has spent most of his 45-year legal career working to hollow it out.

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

AOC: The problem is that the Trump administration, they think that destroying our health care, making sure that housing is too expensive to live in, that jacking up the cost of our groceries—they think all of this is about hurting Democrats. What they are doing is hurting Americans

Pretending to the world that you are the president of peace while waging war at home is diabolical.
Having such a great time @allthingsopen.bsky.social, catching up w/ old friends, making new ones, & hearing from some of the best to get on stage!

For day 2, I'll share my quest to balance #AI innovation w/ #opensource #SLMs without losing focus on performance, privacy, & the planet. See you there!

Really would like people to shift their thinking to the point where they see themselves and the people around them as the people who will collectively navigate through this moment.

I'd like to thank the Center for Cultural Innovation - AmbitioUS!
Their support of Blacksky Algorithms with a $30K grant will help us further our development of infrastructure for online communities (moderation, deliberation, and peer-to-peer payment tools). 🎉

It really can't be said enough: the goal of the "anti-woke" movement was always to destroy social norms against bigotry. And it worked. And there's a whole lot of purportedly "left" thinkers & commentators who helped it -- indeed, it couldn't have been done without them.

They should feel bad.

Heya PC gamers:

Just a reminder that if you're updating MSI Afterburner today you should ONLY download it from MSI's official website.

That's MSI dot com. Be 100% certain of the address, because there have been fakes released with malware and ransomware.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

I hear and see your concerns. Over the weekend, a couple users hosted on Blacksky's PDS were banned from the Bluesky app and thus the Bluesky API servers. This was a weakness of our system I've been aware of and hoped we had more time to address before any kind of public incident. 1/11

You don't have to be good at fascism to be good at it unfortunately.
that said: I think the "it's not fascism unless they're good at it" brand of analysis probably isn't the move

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that all these data centers are going into communities that have been historically targeted for exploitation and have the least amount of civic power wielded by the people living there.

Why Are Plans for This Alabama Data Center So Hush-Hush?
Officials in Bessemer, Alabama, are mum on Project Marvel, a proposed data center the size of 18 Walmart Supercenters.
