today was my first time hearing any of Raven Chacon’s visual scores performed live and everybody delivered. so cool to get a whole day of chances to practice this kind of attentiveness.
visual score for Raven Chacon’s piece Compass, installed on a full gallery wall. four circles arranged as compass points and connected by arced arrows. each circle has three squares with icons representing different pitch relationships, duration, timbre, and sequence. the whole
thing is bracketed by angled lines. guide to the icons that appear in the score

text reads:

Pitch
Induce feedback, resolving and settling on a stable, constant tone
Pluck a 3-note unison
Pluck a 3-octave (same pitch class) chord

Progression
I - Any starting pitch class
III - Any pitch class between I and V
V - Any pitch appoximately a 5th interval from the starting pitch class

Rhythm/Tone
Use the volume knob to effect feedback oscillation.
This may also affect pitch
Rhythmically switch the toggle switch between all possible settings
Very slowly press or depress the wah pedal over the course of the prompt

Transition
Right-hand or left-hand hammer-on any 3 notes, one at a time, letting each sustain before tapping the next
Left-hand prepare pre-bend and pluck string while prepering another pre-bend to be played next
Right-hand slide 3 fingers along 3 strings (over the fret board) to produce harmonic glissandos Wall text continues:

For overly amplified electric guitar, distortion options, and wah pedal or tone controls.
To be performed (or prepared) in an outdoors open space or field or desert.
Slowly turn up the volume of the amplifier.
Starting with the first prompt circle (Pitch), choose a note/chord type. Sound the tone(s) and sustain them, constantly shaking the guitar if necessary.
Next choose if this tone is to be I, Ill, or V of a harmonic progression.
Next choose a rhythmic/tone-altering technique and perform it while still sustaining the tone.
When the tone is no longer sustainable, choose a transitional gesture and
perform it to restart the cycle of prompts.
To choose the next note type and relative harmonic position where the note will occur, pay attention to the direction that the wind is blowing.
This will decide for you to choose the option that is clockwise or counterclockwise to the first choices. Perform the new pitch(es) in their appropriate positions.
To choose the next rhythmic/tone technique, look at the shadows of your surroundings. They will point to the next action. Activate this technique to alter the rhythm/tone.
To choose the next transitional gesture, look for other life, mobile or immobile, and witness how they move. They will teach you and you can use this technique to begin the cycle again.
Continue for as long as you desire, then slowly turn down the volume of the amplifier.
Then turn it off. more wall text:

Compass, 2021
Score

Compass... explores this idea of reading the pulses and paces of the world around us. There are things happening in nature, and then there is music. And somehow, we can read these things, we can be a part of them and then respond, and the aligning of the musician with the rest of the world is what creates the music.
-Raven Chacon

Central to Raven Chacon's multivalent work is site and setting:
"I think of my compositions as a long-time study of... the dynamics of the musicians in a context: who they are, where they are geographically, the specific site in which they are performing, and the history of that site and its surrounding geography." These contextual dynamics, and their presence in his work as a composer and musician, are fundamental to how we see, hear, and read Chacon's works. Compass is a composition for a solo performer on an overly amplified guitar, to be played outdoors. As presented on the wall, Compass is a graphic picture that functions as a fixed position that grounds the artworks it hangs alongside.

Telescope octopus (genus Amphitretus) are gelatinous, transparent and almost colourless octopuses with unique tubular eyes. It is thought that these eyes help give them excellent peripheral vision.

They are also quite small, with a mantle length of 9 cm.

ME: *last night* I'm really enjoying these harpsichord pieces by John Bull. I should look into his life. I'll bet he wasn't a spy for Queen Elizabeth who had to flee England after the Archbishop of Canterbury declared him "the horniest man alive."

WIKIPEDIA:
In 1586 he received his degree from Oxford, and he became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal that same year. In 1591, following the death of John Blitheman, he became organist at the Chapel Royal; in 1592 he received his doctorate from Oxford, and in 1596 he became the first professor of music at Gresham College on the recommendation of Queen Elizabeth, who admired him. There is some evidence that she sent Bull on espionage missions: his eighteen-month trip to the continent in 1601–02, ostensibly for health reasons, has never been satisfactorily explained, and his whereabouts there, apart from a visit to Brussels, then in the Spanish Netherlands, remain a mystery.[4][5] On the death of Elizabeth, he entered into the service of King James, establishing a reputation as a skilled composer, keyboard performer and improviser. Just after publishing seven keyboard pieces in Parthenia, Bull left England for good, secretly and with great haste in October 1613. His salary at the Chapel Royal was paid in lieu to Edmund Hooper.[7] Bull was fleeing the wrath of George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, and King James himself; the charge this time was adultery. William Trumbull, the English envoy in the Low Countries, after first attempting to cover for him – but later fearing for his own position if he continued to do so – wrote to the King in early 1614:

Bull did not leave your Majesties service for any wrong done unto him, or for matter of religion, under which fained pretext he now sought to wrong the reputation of your Majesties justice, but did in that dishonest matter steal out of England through the guilt of a corrupt conscience, to escape the punishment, which notoriously he had deserved, and was designed to have been inflicted on him by the hand of justice, for his incontinence, fornication, adultery, and other grievious crimes. The Archbishop of Canterbury had said of him the previous year: "the man hath more music than honesty and is as famous for marring of virginity as he is for fingering of organs and virginals."

anyone else notice that the west took a turn for the worse once the concept of signaling one’s own social virtue became derogatory, almost as if cynically deriding all displays of charity and good will is indicative of a deeply cynical and nihilistic society capable of collaborating in genocide

POTLATCH PUNK, 2018

Jackets with seed beads, shell buttons

My series, Potlatch Punk, begin in 201 4 shortly afte r
graduating university and has been evolving as it
continues. Originally, the series consisted of only
embellished jackets, but in 2021, I began making blankets
similar to the ones that are made for regalia in my home
community. These works are not regalia in the sense that
they are not intended for ceremony, but are a way of
borrowing the format to denote the important acts of joy
and resistance that play a significant role in forming and
maintaining my cultural and political identities

The "bahtlat" or "potlatch" is a traditional governance
system used by many Indigenous peoples west of The
Rocky Mountains, including my own. They are hosted by
individual clans and are held to make important decisions,
commemorate arrivals, departures and death, as well as to
formally pass on specific roles/names within the
community. Guests from other clans and nations are
invited to witness, and generous gifts are given for this
service. Potlatches are also a way to redistribute wealth;
some potlatches are held explicitly as acts of gratitude or

communal care. When blankets (and songs, dances and
other artwork) are made for potlatches, they are typically
commissioned from artists outside of the hosting clan. I try to
thread these principles throughout my projects

This jacket speaks to the need I sometimes have in urban
spaces, and especially when
am travelling, to be recognized
if not as a member of my admittedly obscure home
community, at least as someone from the distinct tradition of
potlatching nations. As a nation with only just over 2500
registered members, creating a record that proves our
presence for future generations wherever possible has
always felt important in my work
