UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Yeah I was really surprised how well they managed to make the 2023 setting work for Orient Express

I'm fascinated (and frequently irritated) by the liberties taken in adaptations, so when I learned Microids put Death on the Nile in the 1970s, I had to find out why

it’s time we talk about one of the most important parts of a great horror game: the creepy doll

the haunted dolls in silent hill F and bloodborne, in particular, are the most perfect chariots through the underworld

i’d be lost in the nightmare without them…🕊️

www.gamesradar.com/games/silent...
The best part of Silent Hill f is also my favorite from Bloodborne, and it has nothing to do with "Soulslike" combat
Opinion | It's not always a haunted doll, but it's usually a haunted doll

I'm not convinced adding an action hero-style plotline was the right choice, though I do at least respect how closely they thought about the source material for most of the changes

For all the "gotta make games like movies" of the past decade or more, it's increasingly apparent (to me anyway) that the people making these choices don't *really* know what makes a good movie
fionnthebrave.bsky.social
In Chapter 2 of Yotei now and am convinced this should've been two games (and more linear), for mechanical reasons but also for storytelling. The credits rolling after the Oni sequence, then Game 2 starting with the Oshima Coast raid? Would've been incrediblly good. Wasted cool points

Ghost of Yotei: "Next objective, search for the yaoi master"

*Listens to the wind*

"... wait that's *yari* master, sorry"

Oh I meant like that stream of prequel/explainer movies for a while, like Malificent, that kind of thing. The original story is enough!
fionnthebrave.bsky.social
Yeah the phrasing of Sandfall's announcement ("a bit of whee and woo") makes it sound like they might have an Esquie-related substory in mind. Or maybe it was just meant for fun, which is my hope
fionnthebrave.bsky.social
Fine, I'll add to the discourse.

Esquie Expedition 33 doesn't need his own story. Not everything needs explaining, and it's good to leave successful things alone sometimes

It's not a new trick for this genre; Modern Warfare 2's big gimmick was basically 'Red Dawn.' But playing soldier in a burning Brooklyn makes Battlefield depressing, especially at a time when the president is sending armed forces to democratic cities.

the real secret to getting high traffic indie game coverage is having an interesting game that people would actually want to read about
maximjdev.bsky.social
Pretty much nobody cared about The Hayseed Knight's press releases "this whatever game is coming out" news in sites that would even give me the time of day, but it only took @dashiellwood.com finding a good angle to tell the story for the article to go viral everywhere!! There's an audience!!

i wish games editorial could freely share their traffic data so that indies could understand just how little traffic their launch news after 7 years of dev does compared to like. Widely Anticipated AAA Game Posts Trailer Showing New Character's Face For 3 Total Seconds

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

I played a bunch of Yakuza Kiwami 3 at TGS.

RGG obviously has an impressive pipeline for producing high-quality games quickly... HOWEVER, while the new combat looks great and the Dragon Engine has never looked better, I am not sold on several creative choices.

Ryu Ga Gotoku's remake of Like A Dragon's black sheep is slick and polished, but might have lost some of the game's charm.

Happy anniversary, and congrats to you both!!!
fionnthebrave.bsky.social
Yeah the latter definitely makes sense. The style's even a bit Illumination but you'd think if they *were* involved, it'd be mentioned or a logo would show up

The name and the pacifier make me think it's either some Sims-like family management game (the player is moving the pacifier) OR some horrendously sad animated short about a deceased relative staying close to the family from The Beyond (a ghost is moving the pacifier)
