The "R.R." in J.R.R. Tolkien stands for "Ruff Ryder". Same as George R.R. Martin, weird enough. He/Him

The "cognitive decline and brain damage from repeat COVID infections" and "easy to use robot that makes slop and melts your critical thinking skills" is a hell of a combo in a post-fact media ecosystem

Props to Rockstar for building a huge media empire where the first few hours of your encounter with it are you trying to figure out controls while The Most Annoying Man Who Has Ever Lived ceaselessly berates you for not being an expert already

Worked up a poster for Sinners - that cross section of horror movies, period pieces, and roots music checks an awful lot of my boxes, and heavens but it was beautifully made.
A desaturated blue (just glancing at green from across the street), black, and yellow-orange poster. It features Miles Caton in the middle playing his guitar, shadowed faces of Michael B. Jordan on either side of him (with the Stack character sporting the orange echoed elsewhere for his gold tooth). At the bottom, in heavy shadows, is the vampire band, and behind them, silhouettes lit by flame, are line-dancing figures with glowing eyes. Their shape suggests that a few of them are characters from the movie: Mary, Pearline, Cornbread, and Bo Chow. There are credits, an R rating, and a Warner Brother's logo at the bottom and above the film's title (done in an old timey flashy saloon font that might befit a juke joint) is the text "A film by Ryan Coogler."

Someone stole exactly one pair of panties from a box of 6. There’s lore here.

Honestly the most relatable news story ever, especially the going for a carvery in the middle.

You should be allowed to! It's bullshit that you can't!

One of my sincerely held beliefs is that if you have enough friends from other countries, you should be able to celebrate their holidays, too.

In a just world, I would be getting Monday off for Canadian Thanksgiving.

Oh, I have the DVD, but it doesn't look like it's streaming in the US.

Ultimately Sinners has two real messages.

1. Music is good.
2. Cunnilingus is good.
franzferdinand2.bsky.social
No, you're completely correct in every way.

Actually, I'm going to throw my hat out: would anybody like to have me on their podcast/newsletter to talk about Appalachian pulp, folklore, witchlore, and the benefits of weirding historical fiction? I think these stories are good, and I want to talk about them!

Fuck Prime Day. PDFs of GHOST DAYS and IN THE SNOW, THE JUNGLE are on sale for just 3$ today, which means you can grab this fully illustrated short story collection AND its followup novella for just $6.

This is true and they are super endangered by poachers who shovel them up by the hundreds and sell them at flea markets and shit. You should not buy the plants and if you happen to kick the poacher in the shins on accident, no one will hear about it from me.

still amazing to me the number of movies, games, etc. which have Venus Flytrap-based creatures in some form compared to the actual native range of Venus Flytrap, which is like, the great untamed jungles of a few wet pine savannas in North Carolina
map illustrating the native range of Venus Flytrap plants, just a little half circle around coastal North and South Carolina in USA

Again, the actual fascism that it makes most sense to compare this to is the confederacy, which was similarly a bunch of dipshit, know-nothing failsons who couldn't govern their way out of a paper bag.

I could read 100 books about Alex Easton bumping up against the supernatural. And the way the supernatural all ends up walking that perfect line between alien but also still understandable? Goddamn.

I remember when someone talked to the person who had actually coined the expression "emotional labor" and she was like "Wait, THAT'S what people are using it for now?"
