This is our dog Nutmeg.

She will be 12 this month. She lost her eyesight gradually a couple of years ago. We knew she had cataracts from her milky eyes, but one day we realised they had got pretty bad. (How we realised how bad they had got is another story I will post on here at some point).

Beware of AI videos like the one below.

And, AI sucks for many reasons, but among the worst is that it destabilizes our shared reality.

OMG! I saw a backpack baby brushtail possum last night, and last week I saw a baby ringtail in its mama’s pouch and I could see it scratching its ear and I think suckling?! 🥹

Yesterday, IUCN declared the Slender-billed Curlew to be extinct.
How did we let this happen?
What lessons are there for the future?

Happy butterfly season to all who celebrate. If you’re in Melbourne good news - the caper whites have arrived!

Was just at a neighborhood school at dismissal. Hundreds of people with whistles surrounding the school and stationed down every block making sure ICE doesn’t snatch anyone. The same is happening at all the schools around here. I love my neighborhood and I love Chicago.

I'm doing another print run of these "Biology is Bigger than Binaries" shirts!

Back, quite literally, by popular demand. Bullying works, sure, but so does a bunch of nice cutie patooties politely asking!

Order 'em now, I'll mail 'em in early November.

a woman with short bown hair, glasses, and tassel earrings, wears a purple KN95 and looks cool as hell in her biology is bigger than binaries shirt, in orange a woman with green glasses takes a selfie lookin' cool as hell in her pink biology is bigger than binaries shirt. I used to play touch in a mid-week park comp down here in Melbourne and one time former Wallabies flanker Matt Cockbain was on the opposition team. It was a few years after he’d retired from professional rugby but even so when he had the ball and I made a touch on his abs they were like granite.

If this ceasefire happens - and I hope it does - Western media will talk about 'peace'. This will be inaccurate. What they will mean is 'quiet', a reversion to the background level of violence that Palestinians have faced for decades. Peace can only come with the end of the occupation and apartheid.

I’ve seen them at the Western Treatment Plant. Ten or so years ago a brolga chick was killed by a fox there 😠

There are heaps in Melbourne even in the inner city - I’ve seen them in Fairfield and in Royal Park - but I’ve never seen so many as I have in the two years that I’ve lived in Eltham. They’re everywhere here. We recently learned that one of the local restaurants feeds them after service! 😡

Seeing as how this post has “broken containment” as they say let me clarify that here in Australia this is a very bad thing. Foxes are introduced predators here and are implicated in the extinction and ongoing decline of many, many native species. The adult in this video is carrying a native possum.

She ran off when she noticed me/decided I was a threat. If you watch the video with the sound up, the kits all hide when they hear one of my dogs bark.

The level of destruction and erasure in the Gaza Strip is simply incredible. North Gaza, before and after:

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

I guess I’ll report it to the council but I’m not sure what they can do when it’s on private property in an empty house?

Our neighbours have moved out or gone away - we haven’t seen them in months - and we’ve suspected there’s a fox living in their back garden because our dogs keep barking at the fence. Turns out there’s a whole FAMILY! I just saw over the fence one of the adults bringing a dead possum to the kits:

This is incredible news, and shows the incredible power of collective action. The fight against the neoliberal university (my own included) goes on, but its nice to hear some good news for a change.

#Breaking | ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences will not face structural changes at this time. No renaming, merging, or disestablishment of areas. Change management appears to have been halted, even walked back completely. It’s unclear the impacts of this announcement on the school of music.

This was twenty-three months ago. Israeli forces have killed more than 16,365 kids since.

November 7, 2023 — Kids in Gaza host a press conference, in English, to beg the world for life.

“We come now to shout and invite you to protect us; we want to live, we want peace…we want to live as the other children live.”

At the time, Israel forces had killed over 4,200 kids like these.
