1975: Harlan Ellison visits Michael Moorcock in London. The Englishman sits Ellison in front of the TV when Dr Who comes on & insists Ellison “be quiet & just watch”. By the late 1970s,Ellison is such a fan of Dr Who that he’s taunting US scifi fans with declarations of its superiority over US fare.

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.

Making people afraid of marginalized strangers, and avoiding cultivation of skepticism of state power essential to any meaningful democratic civic life, is one of the most dangerous aspects of so-called Abundance and other various corporate neo-liberal attempts to co-opt a coalition against fascism.

It is bitter to know that a good chunk of people over there are certainly relieved that, as someone put it, they “dont have to pretend to care anymore.”

There’s a genocide happening and your primary concern is how you can remain unmoved and escape blame for your cold hearted apathy? No, how to shift that blame onto someone who *is* moved!

I keep thinking back, about how I had to see all of those folks on the SFWA discord strategizing openly about how to say nothing about Palestine.

I did eventually write again. I still don’t know how to navigate this scene.

This was said by a city planner Lawrence Veiller. It’s not quiet at all. He suggested adding costs through codes would force builders to build single family homes instead of infill density.
joshlinden.bsky.social
Many of our land use / building codes are rooted in exclusion + prejudice, even if they are facially anodyne and widely accepted as common sense today

Case in point: early 1900 fire safety reforms were primarily designed to ⬆️ the cost of tenements / MF apts (old and new) to reduce immigration
From Stuck: "If we require multiple dwellings to be fireproof, and thus increase the cost of construction; if we require stairs to be fireproofed, even when there are only three families; if we require fire-escapes and a host of other things," then, he continued, each of the rules could stand up in court, "and at the same time we have made it difficult to build apartment homes." From Stuck: But although some champions of tenement reform were earnest in their efforts, no one who had paid the slightest attention to the movement could have any doubt as to the actual aims of many reformers. The influx of immigrants to New York City was the problem; eliminating affordable housing was the solution. From Stuck: Veiller, instead, did everything in his power to make housing more expensive. Immigrants continued to pour into the city in the years immediately after the passage of the Tenement Act, but newly constructed tenements became increasingly unaffordable. The cost of making the improvements to old-law tenements mandated by the law, and increasing competition for the remaining affordable units, combined to drive up prices, setting off rent strikes in 1904 and 1907. "The fact is that the new-law tenements ... are beyond the reach of unskilled wage earners," one reformer complained in 1919.

I’ve been doing some research, and it seems the revolutionary movement in Paul Thomas Anderson’s movie One Battle After Another, #TheFrench75 is named after a 75mm French artillery piece, which was also the inspiration for the cocktail of the same name.

I mean. So many “small market” teams are in fact in big markets, and owners just plead poverty. 🙂

But you are correct that BlueJays payroll is in the top 1/4 of mlb teams. Thank you for the gentle correction.

My apologies to everyone in Milwaukee if I just jinxed the #BrewCrew

Everyone who complains about competitive balance in #MLB can just stfu. The #Bluejays, #Mariners and (probably) the #Brewers all all in the final round of the playoffs with Only 1 big market team (the Dodgers).

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

In Chicago, four vehicles descended and eight ICE agents moved in to kidnap a child.

She screams, “I’m 15,” as ICE yanks her from the car and kneels on her neck.

This is not about immigration enforcement.

It's about terrorizing Americans.

Telling the federal court that IL police can handle Broadview was part of the state's legal strategy against national guard being deployed here.

But it's hard to square that as for the good of protestors or Illinoisans as a whole, when IL police are perfectly willing to drag and beat them anyway.

state police continue to push protesters down 25th street. at one point, cops swarmed a group of people and pushed them to the ground.

For decades lawmakers have funded and outfitted cops with military gear who are trained to unload on anyone for any reason they see fit, and now getting indiscriminately beaten and arrested by them is apparently the only defense from the actual military doing worse.
