Mapping US wind energy infrastructure with H3 hexagons for #30DayMapChallenge Day 25.

Turbines and their capacity are aggregated by H3 level; we apply a "fade effect" as the user zooms to reveal smaller hexagons then individual turbines.

Posting a tutorial later today!

Some important data about making inclusionary zoning work

Among other things: the per-unit (below market) tax abatement subsidy (using Portland's model) is less than public cost to directly fund a comparably priced unit in, for ex, an all affordable development. And it's driving results

Love love love stories like this
Yesterday on my way to the gym I hit 500 miles on my ebike. Before I got it, I basically never biked, so almost all of those trips would have been by car. It was ~40 degrees out and I was on my way to swim when I hit 500 miles. Absolutely life changing.

Great to see the progress being made on the Purple Line. This line is going to make getting around easier and help connect our communities to more opportunities.

It gets even better later in that same graf!

"To let [her parents] off the hook, she seeks to force residents of Seattle to pay for 'free' child care and other goodies"

If only there was a city closer to home with a comparable program that did not produce a mass exodus of capital or rich HHs...

I see we've reached the phase of authoritarian consolidation where the president publicly demands investigations of high profile ppl in the opposition party **as retaliation**, the top law enforcement official enthusiastically says "yessir, on it", and it's no longer covered by media as a scandal
Instead of just releasing the Epstein files, Trump ordered the DOJ to investigate Democrats and AG Pam Bondi is complying.

Are they setting up a pretext to block the release by arguing the files are now part of an active investigation? I’m not saying that would work, but he’s desperate to block.

Very good set of recs to improve BIL-funded transportation programs

And props for a great thumbnail picture choice (of Purple Line construction at Silver Spring) as well 🙂
US Congress is already discussing reauthorizing transport programs funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021.

Our team @urbaninstitute.bsky.social recommends how Congress should use new legislation to improve effectiveness, environmental sustainability, & access in the transport system ⏬
The Reauthorization of Federal Transportation Programs Offers Policymakers an Opportunity to Improve Effectiveness, Environmental Sustainability, and Access
Federal policymakers should consider three strategies to guide deliberations around reauthorization and improvement of Americans’ quality of life.

Clearly the originalist interpretation of "give me your tired, your poor" etc etc
Marco Rubio says U.S. visas can be denied for obesity, diabetes, cancer, and even retirement age because those people might “drain taxpayer resources. Amazing how that concern disappears when they’re blowing millions on luxury travel, parties, and renovations.

An *uninterrupted and direct Metropolitan Branch Trail will be such a game changer for so many (even if the surface quality of some of the newest segments could be better 🙃)

*Some work to do on the MoCo side to make this uninterrupted all the way to Silver Spring Metro, and then Bethesda (via CCT)!
Never thought I would live to see the day the Metropolitan Branch Trail stretch from Fort Totten to Takoma along Blair Road NW opened, but here we are!

- Charging restaurant as high as $24k annually ($20/sq ft)
- Disallowing full enclosure (for cold/bad weather)
- Onerous setback reqs from alleys, trees, etc

The net effect does feel pretty hostile to streateries. Which is a shame - they're a wonderful, active, and highly social use of public ROW
DC's streateries are dying off thanks to... DC

“This feels like a way to say ‘I don’t want streateries, but I don’t want to say that part out loud, and so we’re going to create this really onerous process.’”

I think Kaine genuinely cares about the people getting hurt...but saying "everybody will see" is such a pitch perfect example of why Dems keep flailing and failing

No, in this media environment, in this political moment, not everybody will see. In fact, few will see, and even fewer will care
Kaine on why he thinks just getting a vote on healthcare is a win: "We're the minority party, but everybody will get to see who is standing for them when it comes to lowering their healthcare costs"

Not saying they can do it (definitely seems implausible)...but 186 miles of metro construction in less than 15 years would be incredible, to say the least

Here in Maryland, we're crossing our fingers that a mere 16 miles of (light rail) Purple Line construction will actually finish by year 10

If you care about tree conservation, you should be a passionate supporter of eliminating parking mandates

(also...that is a cute, affordable triplex. Portland's various housing reforms continue to bring the goods)
Parking was one of the more controversial aspects to Portland's Residential Infill Project.

This newly built triplex at SE 16th & Morrison is a good example of how eliminating parking requirements allowed a mature tree to be saved. www.redfin.com/OR/Portland/...

This is a great example of why good things take forever

The desire to deliver fast improvements *in no way* precludes a DOT from evaluating a full suite of treatment options, grouping them into tiers of costs/complexity/benefits, and then proposing a phased program in sync with capital budgets
A constant theme talking to the MDOT staff at the meeting was that they wanted to deliver improvements as fast as possible and that more comprehensive improvements would slow the project due to environmental review, stormwater management needs, etc

Don't know what justice will look like when we reach the other side of this. But I'm still confident it will come

And the eagerness of those involved - indeed the outright pleasure they show at causing suffering and pain - will be on full display and impossible for them to hide from
A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.
