my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

Watched the first episode of the Chair Company last night. I like Tim Robinson's stuff but I'm not so sure about this one. It felt like an ITYSL sketch that didn't land and went on for too long.

Trying to be polite, but I don't think people outside the US understand just how many of our ancestors fled monarchies.

My Lithuanian ancestors left cursing the Tsar, my German ancestors fled the kulturkampf, and my Irish ancestors fled starvation.

It's not just "Stamp Act Bad", it goes deeper.

Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….

one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

Showing up to No Kings with a sign reading “monarchy is an affront to human dignity but, when incorporated into a liberal democratic system, may nevertheless be a useful safety valve for nationalist and/or authoritarian impulses” and then getting clobbered by a Buttigieg-supporting grandmother

Pick a movie that could have been great. Recast ONE role to fix it.

Seabiscuit (2003) - the horse should have been played by Michael Caine. Some desperately needed gravitas for the title role, which was given to an actual horse (???).

Mine is "The Godfather- Part 3," recasting Sophia Coppola (great director, but should not have been given this role) with Jennifer Jason Leigh.

🇫🇷 Macron told his cabinet that censure motions are dissolution motions. In other words, there will be elections if Lecornu is toppled. Far right & hard left have already tabled censure votes on Thurs. Socialists say they will table their own if Lecornu does not give way today when he speaks at 3pm

There’s the joke about Sun Tzu being basic instructions for idiots like “feed your troops” but the most important part of Clausewitz is also just “think about what you are actually trying to accomplish”

What I love about our habit of confusing Means for Ways is that we also confuse Ways for Ends.

Innovation is entirely neutral.

Garibaldi was like, "Hey Mr. Lincoln, I'd be happy to lead your forces to victory if you free the slaves. "

Happy Garibaldi day to all who celebrate
Giuseppe Garibaldi, founding father of modern Italy. Leftist revolutionary. Presented here with sword and flag in hand after landing on a beach. In the background there are ships and the silhouettes of soldiers.

Don't forget Columbus died penniless & alone from a combination of the flu and gonorrhea, after he had already destroyed his own reputation by begging for money to fund more voyages that he was convinced were ushering in the rapture. He wasn't a "hero" until almost 400 years after his original trip.
