This is big news: Sound Transit is proposing to launch a new overnight ST Express network, once Federal Way and East Link are both fully operational.

There would be three routes: Everett-Seattle, Lakewood-SeaTac-Seattle, and Redmond-Seattle. Headways are still TBD, but expected to be around 30 min.

Overnight Service Proposal
Purpose & Goals
• Provide overnight bus service along Link lines and
core ST Express network.
• Serve riders and destinations with continuous or nontraditional need, such as hospitals and the airport.
• Combined with Metro’s late-night network, 85% of
Link station areas would be served all day and all
night.
Service Proposal
• Three routes: Everett-Seattle, Lakewood-SEA-Seattle,
and Redmond-Seattle
• Service from approx. midnight to 5 a.m., 7 days/wk;
could also support Link maintenance window expansion
• Headways: 15-60min

This got me thinking. Turns out Sound Transit relies on the MVET for 9.3% of its $4.4 billion of revenue in 2025, compared to only 1.4% from fares. That means car tab evasion is almost certainly costing ST far more revenue than fare evasion.

I was today years old when I found out that in ‘93, SF voters passed Proposition AA, requiring their Mayor, Councilmember, & City staff to take transit 2 days a week.

This morning @councilmember-amr.bsky.social called for the council's transportation committee to pursue some type of formal inquiry into the decision to rule out additional bus lanes on Denny Way's most congested blocks to get the Route 8 out of traffic.

Gene Balk, the excellent data journalist over at the Seattle Times, wrote more this week about the car ownership ceiling Seattle seems to have hit back in 2017. From 2010 to 2017, Seattle's population boomed as did the number of cars registered in the city. After 2017, the population continued growing, but the number of cars has stayed essentially unchanged.
