It’s sort of also how I feel about artists doing anything in what they think is a “Ghibli style,” yeah. There’s very little thought put into it, and it’s typically a purely aesthetic exploration motivated by largely uncritical nostalgic feelings.

William Joyce was also a production designer for the film Robots and also wrote the books that Meet The Robinsons and Rise of the Guardians were based on. You can see the same mechanical aesthetic permeate all of those films in various ways. He also likes circles and faces on buildings.

The first film has traces of that mixed with the Cold War (MCP forbidding Programs from believing or praying to Users, which fits the general perception of Communists from an American pov). Second film definitely has more of that mixed with the “decadence” of modern society.

Like Tron really needs to lean into the “users as gods” idea to critique the pseudo religious fervor techno fascists like Musk and Bezos build around themselves and really lean into the whole choosing your own identity theme more (with more queer and BIPOC folks explicitly).
